Yes, not the clearest email. I read it to mean spec 229.3 applies unless you're using the car in Europe, in which case 229.5 applies.
I'll write back and simply ask whether spec 229.3 or 229.5 applies to cars being used in the US. I'm assuming they knew from my email (where I so stated) and my VIN that I have a US-spec car.

Okay, I still haven't heard back from Mercedes, but I did dig through the dozen or so manuals that came with my car, and found one that I must have previously overlooked. It clearly states that for non-diesels, specification 229.5 applies.

BTW dealers except for Penske's buy 5-40 in bulk but as the OP said 0-40 European Formula is the way to go! I think Pep Boys has a deal on it right now if you DIY or can give it to your indy. Make sure he uses the proper filter like a Mann to OEM specs.
