what oil to use?

what oil to use?
My dealer attached Mobil 1 decal in engine compartment. I inquired what they use and was told 5W-30.
Looking at specs in manual, Mercedes requires 229.5 which the above does not meet.
Has anyone delved into this?

Unless Mercedes have recently gone to the lighter weight oil than 0W-40 Mobil 1 to get better CAFE averages, the oil MB dealers use is 0W-40 Mobil 1 or 5W-40 Mobil 1. The 5W-40 Mobil1 is a low sulfur version of the 0W-40 used in the past. It works for both gas and diesel versions of MB engines.

On all of our customer cars that call for synthetic oil we use Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5W-40. This product meets the Mercedes 229.5 spec (including AMG) as well as the latest BMW requirement for everything except the M series engines which require 10w60 Motorsport oil. I'm sure Mobil 1 0w40 European Blend or if you can find it, the 5w40 will work just as well. The main thing to remember is you want the 229.5 spec.
Which is not to be confused with 229.51 spec. oil, (usually with green somewhere on the label) made strictly for Diesels with treated exhaust emission components.
Such as Blue Tech Diesels that use the synthetic cow ****-excuse me, synthetic beef urea post combustion additive.
