Batch of problems fixed
Just got my E550 back from the dealer today. Three apparently common failures happened pretty much at the same time around 72k mikes. You'll read about these all over this forum.
First, my transmission was shifting very hard on the 2-3 up shift. This turned out to be a bad clutch pack and bad valve body. Second, the car smelled like gas right after a fill-up. This was diagnosed as a leaking fuel sending unit. Finally, the heater fan was making an obnoxious chirping sound. I've spent hours researching all of these issues and they seem to be somewhat common with this car.
Anyway, $6118.92 later all is good. Thankfully, I have an extended warranty so I only paid $50 deductible plus about $225 for non-covered labor charges. I ended up needing a Mercedes-sourced rebuilt transmission, a new fuel sending unit, and a new heater blower motor.
I have nothing but good things to say about MaxCare extended warranty!

Right. Labor was paid - just not quite at the rate the dealer charges. But, a very large part of the bill was labor. I have a $50 deductible and the warranty paid all but $225 of the remaining $6050.
