Malfunction

Weirdest thing happened this morning.

Went to unlock my car, via remote, to go to work. The alarm sounded! Wouldn't go off until I put the key in the ignition.

Drove to coffee shop enroute to work. Noticed my gas guage was out (all white, no black bars), and the Range dash display said "Range:___" no numbers. Also, the rear sunscreen/shade wouldn't go down and the little red light on the center console between the "lock" and "unlock" buttons was flashing.

Stopped at coffee shop. Car wouldn't not lock via remote. As I was ordering my cuppajoe, the alarm again sounded :rolleeys:

Went straight to dealership (MBLN). I'll advise the results when I get it back.

it sounds like some of the computer sensors didn't register that the car was unlocked via a valid key but other sensors did

Hi Ed! I've been in Lost Wages for a work conference all last week. (The Palms Hotel and Casino is very very nice. Lot's of trendy young coeds in the place trying to get into the clubs).

I *did* notice the spamming posts in O/T, I pretty much skip the ones with 0, 1, or 2 replies only. Most posted by the same 3 or 4 guys. But I don't think of them as idiots. Just high school or college kids with a lot of free time on their hands. I just skip those posts.

How's things in the Great Wet North?

Hmmm, I don't recall describing the "idiots". Although it was not aimed at him, vraa must have decided the "shoe" fit.:p :p :p

Update

Update time. This is day 2 of the car in the shop. The Service Advisor called and told me...guess what.....they can't replicate the alarm going off, and recommends that next time it does, that I should let it go for as long as I can stand it so it can register some diagnostic code in the system for them to troubleshoot.

Funny, MB Teletrac called me two times late last night advising me they received alerts that my car alarm was activated. (funny-they didn't call me about the alerts two days ago when this started happening.).

Anyhow, they say they repaired my gas indicators and sunshade control.

I'll pick it up tonight and hope the alarm thing resolves itself.

ed, i kind of have the same problem you have, but the dealer fixed it....basically, when we would drive, the passenger door was closed, but the car would read its open, so when we turn on the alarm, and the car reads its open after a certain amount of time, it would go off, if they cant fix it now, my suggestion is to just exit your car, get in the back door, and press the lock button on the console. this way your alarm wont be activated.

Joe...another alternative would be to lock the doors from the console and go out thru the sunroof.

or...open the trunk, put down the rear seat, lock the doors from the console and exit thru the trunk. This may be better because you would not have to leave the sun roof open.

Hopefully you would not have to do this for more than 3 or 4 months. :p

Update II

I went to the dealership to pick up my car last night. They had trouble locating it, they said. When the porter brought it up, he said they couldn't get the alarm to stop (gee, isn't that the same issue that I brought it in for, and that the mechanic said he couldn't duplicate???!!?).

Anyhow, I noticed before I left that the auto-up windows didn't function on auto-up. I just figured I'd get it looked at next time I went to the dealership.

Well, this morning, the car did the same exact thing! I pressed unlock on the remote, and the alarm went off. Didn't go off regardless of what buttons I pushed. Didn't go off when I turned the car on either. In fact, I was driving out of my neighborhood with the alarm activating at 0600 hours before it finally stopped. Again, tha gas guage is ghost white, no bars. Same issues as a coupla days ago.

Stopped at coffee shop. Couldn't lock car via remote-again! Car alarm went off while I was in the coffee shop. Drove to dealership-again! After standing by my car for two minutes, the alarm went off-again! This time, the service write-up guy saw it, but that doesn't mean the mechanic will be able to duplicate it-again!

Has this happened to anyone else?

PS-- BMMS8, I didn't have the opportunity to try your suggestion, but I printed it out so that I can. Somehow, I don't think our two problems are related.

Thanks for listening y'all,

EDJ

wow, sorry for all of your problems man. that really does suck. i believe you are right, it has to be something else then a door sensor thats bad. if they cant fix it right now, then i would just get in through the back and lock it that way. and when you want to open your car, use the manual key. hopefully that will work. sorry about all of your probs man

MBLN's

stellar service guys had this to say about the malfunction today:

We replaced the guage module-again. Your remote was misaligned with the alarm's codes (??). I asked how that could be possible and they said if the car had been recently jumped or had the battery disconnected. Neither of which have occurred (unless it happened in the service bays during this past week).

OK, I'll pick it up tonight. We'll know tomorrow morning if we're going to repeat this fun episode for yet a third time.

Thanks for reading...

EDJ, if your auto up was not working - Some one disconnected your battery. My bet is that it was the service guys. YOu'll need to re-learn those along wiht the sunroof as per the manual instructions.

Here's the results...

I think they got it fixed, but here's a link to the Off-Topic thread I just posted regarding my complaints with MB of Laguna Niguel.

Nope!

This morning (Friday), is the the third morning this week that my alarm activated when I used the remote to unlock it, and I've dropped it off at the dealership for the third time this week!

Now the gas guage is fried again for the third time, the turn signals are B/O, and the sunshade does not function, yet again.

We're having some fun now, aren't we?

Did the service peeps seem to have any knowledge of the "letter" and/or your previous treatment? Any chance that they will not wash the car?

Yo, El Diablo...

You better send certified letters to the dealer AND MBUSA. Start documenting everything.

If you're truly having serious and repetitive electrical problems... you might be in for a looooooong service ordeal.

Don't forget your lemon law rights if the situation gets out of hand. Hopefully, MB and the dealer will fix up the whole situation.

Done?

Ed,

Nope, the service advisors did not seem at all aware of my letter/issues.

As an aside, I received a call today (Friday) that my car is again ready for pick up. According to the Service Advisor, the SAM Control Module unit (?) in the trunk was not communicating with the other electronics, hence the repeat problem after the symptoms had been treated.

I'll know by weekend's end if this handles it.

Thanks for all the input, ideas, and consideration.
