check engine light

My wife had a problem securing the gas cap during the last fill-up. The round plastic inserts on the inside of the cap were out of position. I simply twisted them back into place in order to tighten the gas cap, but now my check engine light stays on after starting the ignition. Does anyone know how to reset the light or does it require a trip to the dealer?

According to a technician at Prestige Mercedes of Paramus, NJ, the engine will have to be started, driven, and then shut off about 18 times before the light will reset itself. Should take about a week.

18 times? VW is 10. but its not 18 starts/stops of the engine, so if you do that in your driveway, it won't reset. the OBDII system has to cycle 18 times, and that requires a certain amount of driving and sensor readings.

The check engine light went off today, I'm not sure how many times the car was started.

Slk 230 & CLK500
I had the check engine light come on twice in my 03 CLK500. Both times it was a miss in the engine. After the 2nd time they changed the coils, wires, egr, etc & so far so good. Miss was in #1 cyllinder & then moved around to others.
