05 W211 Replaced Steering Wheel Airbag, now horn and buttons not working

Having the same issue.
DTC 9001, LIN bus communication error in the SCM (steering control module).
The connections all work, transmission shift buttons work, but when I use iCarsoft to see if the SCM seeing buttons being pressed, it doesn't see the the gearshift button action.
Bizarre. happened after I removed the steering wheel.
Clearing the code brings it back instantaneously.
