05 W211 Replaced Steering Wheel Airbag, now horn and buttons not working
Hi I have a 05 W211 E320 CDI Avangard. I bought the car with a deployed steering wheel airbag and have just got round to replacing it. Now nothing on the steering wheel is working, no horn and the buttons do not work..The replacement airbag I bought was off same spec car so cannot understand why its not a straight swap. Do I need to plug the car into star and recode the airbag/multi function module maybe?
I noticed the part numbers on the two units were slightly different and there was a sticker on my original airbag unit which said Q2 and the replacement had Q15.. Not sure if this makes a difference? Any advice would be appreciated.

When you purchased the car was the air bag light on and did it stay on until and after you replaced the air bag-----or did it go out when you installed the replacement air bag.
FYI: MB does most things via complete part numbers----Q numbers are not recognized by EPC----so you haven't got the foggiest idea if it is compatable or not!!
To be sure you check parts via the VIN
After the install did you use the proper tools and remove all the faults??

Hi Plutoe, the airbag had deployed as it was in a little accident. Im buying star this week to clear any codes and also getting the airbag ecu flashed if needs be, although I have read you can erase crash data upto 5 times on MB air ecus but will need to see when I get the diagnostics kit..Also will double check on EPC if the part numbers are compatible.
Should the steering wheel airbag units be a straight forward plug and play on these cars? or do they normally need some kind of coding work to get them communicating?

Always nice to get the complete story first----
In any event no coding, just installmand clear
Make sure you get "development keys" on you DAS Xentry or you will not be able to adjust the crash data--the option just will not be available!!

Ok thanks for your help I will try clearing all crash/ fault codes via Star and see if that cures the probelm. One more thing, if clearing the code has no effect and the airbag unit is different and uncompatible in its current state, is there any option in Star/ Xentry to recode this module so it does start communicating with my car? Or would I have to try source an airbag with exact same airbag part number?
I was thinking about this and was wondering if I could use my original multifunction unit (buttons chassis and any electrics) and just swap the new/undeployed airbag into my old unit into old chassis?

It's the airbag control module that you have to worry about!!
I only replace airbags with the part number specified for the car, therefore have NO experience with any mix and match stuff or used stuff!!

I connected mine to "Xentry" scanner and this message came: (LIN bus communication error)
I tried to find out what it was but no one seem to know.
Dealer will know what this information is but unfortunately I don't know anyone working at MB.

Something is very strange, I could not find a fault like you described-----All MB airbag faults either have a fault number or an event number prefix----what is your fault number and or event number???
Alternativly post a Xentry screen shot??

I know it is very strange as I've even looked up online can't find anything relating to that, the code is: 9001

I think that you lied and are misleading all of us, because if you were really using DAS Xentry you would know that a fault of 9001= Control unit N2/7(Restraint system control unit) is defective.
Replace the unit and get on with your life!!

What do you mean by control unit? Do you mean the module? If that's the case I have even replaced that!

What version of DAS Xentry are you using?? Please show us DAS Xentry screen shot!!
Your tool shows a control module as SCM(MRE)---where in DAS Xentry is that module?
My DAS Xentry version 10_2008 and version 01_2014 shows AB= air bag or SRS=sub restraint system as control modules
Are you sure you have DAS Xentry or is this one of your tricks!!!!
