Replace a single rocker arm on M113

So I have had the car since September and it has had an intermittent ticking on the drivers side that varies in sound. Figured it would be a bad lifter. Pulled the valve cover today and found the #8 cylinder exhaust rocker arm roller was beat up. The cam has some light scoring.

Has anyone ever just changed one rocker arm? the rocker shafts look pressed on the ends. The rocker shaft does slide some hitting it with a hammer (3mm) but I also have not beat it to death to get it out. Don't want to damage anything until I put it up for discussion.

Or.. has anyone had this same issue/seen this issue of the beat up roller?

Thanks

Ok, so answering my own thread.

Yes, you can change just one rocker arm if needed. The bad part is that I have a burn cam lobe so I am now searching for a used c55 m113 camshaft. I know this is a w211 thread but when I posted I expected better luck as there are so many e55s.

This "How To" starts after the valve cover has been removed and rocker arm assembly has been unbolted. In MBWorld there are multiple threads on how to remove and replace cams, see these first.

1)The entire rocker arm assembly is off the engine on a work bench.
2)Make sure all of the bolts that hold the rocker arm assembly down are out as there are half moons cut into the rocker shaft that the bolts go through.
3)I took a puller and modified it to push on the rocker shaft.
4)I had to add 1/4 inch deep sockets to keep pushing the shaft along. Luckily I had to remove the last exhaust rocker but with a bunch of 1/4 in sockets I could have pushed it all of the way out.

I will add more as I fix it up. The ticking that made me inspect the engine has been there since Sept. and it started to get a little louder after a multiple drag and road racing events. (Drive it like you stole it!)

Bad news: Stock cams are $1700 *choke, cough* but...

Good News! I found a place called Delta Cams and was told $85 plus shipping to repair the worn lobe. I searched reviews for them and it all looked good and they have online videos of their process.

This place and a few more carry the rocker arms $66 and valve cover gaskets $12.50 http://www.germanstar.biz/113e.htm

When I get my cam back I will post pictures of the repaired cam. 2 day turn around but I am in DC area and they are in Washington state so shipping will add 1.5-2 weeks

Did you figure out what caused the damage?

So far it points to a clogged oil channel in the rocker arm that goes from the rocker arm shaft to the rocker arm roller (that rides on the cam). Only the one lobe and the roller on that rocker is damaged. The shaft that goes through the rocker arm (and also supplies oiling to all of the rocker arms) is undamaged and looks brand new. In the near future I will get the roller pin pressed out to confirm what actually clogged the passage. piece of metal, gasket material, etc. or it could just be a casting defect that prevented a full oil flow at higher rpms. There is no sludge build up anywhere so I don't think it is that....

Delta Cams was unable to repair the cam.

After BSn me for 10 days saying a machine was down, they welded it and only needed to regrind it, then telling me that hadn't done anything yet but would need to resurface all of the lobes for and additional $500 it ended with "the cam has pressed on lobes and cannot weld it due to the heat issues, we will send it back the way we got it"

Luckily I was able to reschedule my upcoming track day to the end of March, just need a cam...

Could have been sealant, but I think this is mostly caused by timing case work.

Also yes cams are pressed on two piece, super expensive from dealer!

I ended up putting in a used cam ($600) and a new rocker arm ($50ish) and new cam stretch bolts. ($80?)

The used cam had less than 50k and my engine had low 90k at the time of the repair. Since the cam and the cam bearings showed no wear or scoring I had no concerns. 25,000+ miles ago.

I have found better prices for OEM AMG parts overseas in U.K. ads online
Or you could try RennTech in Florida.
