I found the air bags can develop a very small crack in the fold. While running the compressor can put in more air than leaks out so it stays up. When empty not running the change in temps can cause the air in the bag to expand or contract and open the crack. IF the compressor is active it will maintain level. If not it will leak down. I have had cars with air suspension since 84 and seen this happen many times. It is also possible to have a hose to the accumulator leaking due to corrosion. So it is possible.

90% of the time what I find is a airbag/air spring failing. After you drive a while the crack will open up and the compressor will run longer. IF it runs too long it will exceed duty cycle and burn out the compressor. Then you get to replace the leaky bag/spring and compressor.

This is for just one wheel leaking down. Consider on the rear both airbags/springs are the same age. The extra weight with one begins to fail will pull on the other bag/spring the same age and can quickly cause it to fail. This is why when you have a defective air spring/bag replace in pairs.

Arnott is a good supplier of these parts and my E500 had Arnott's on the front.
