Pressing and holding the unlock (or lock to close) button while aiming the IR at the door handle does nothing. Tried both remotes. Does the IR part of the fob use more power? Could it just be that I need new batteries? The fobs are both 7 years old. How long do the batteries last?

They commonly fail but you could try to clean the IR window/ test with camera. You could also try new batteries if you wanted to 7 years is a long time but my C class had original batteries in one remote for I believe it was 10 years.

I've read a lot of posts about the issue here, including one that mentions that the door handle mech can fail for several reasons (the little square window does look a bit fogged), but I would rather not take the handle apart. I never heard about this "test it with a camera" deal. Great idea! So I just tried.... turned on my iPhone camera and "looked" at the remote while holding the button... and nothing. An iPhone should pick it up yes? I don't happen to have anything IR laying around to compare to. Will have to stop by the shop on my way home and aim a rifle sight at my iPhone and see.

Any TV remote will work fine

My cell phone pics it up just hit a button on the key fob and it should flicker purple. +1 on tv remote

The camera on an iPhone will not pick up IR. Tried two different Androind phones, and they both picked it up. So the remotes are fine. Guess I'll have to dick with the door handle :-(
