2005 E500 Issues (Gift for my Son)

I bought a 2005 E500 for my son's 17th birthday next week (he still needs a driver's license though), it has several issues I'd like to remedy as many as possible.

1) Rear vents intermittently blow hot air.
-- I found a thread here, looks like replacing the Heater Control Valve will fix this one.

2) Front Right Fog Lamp lens is broke
-- I found the part, just got to find replacement instructions

3) The seat pocket storage behind the driver's seat is ripped open (the plastic piece towards the center of the car is broke)...I don't know if this can be bought separately or how to tell the color of the interior. I may have to remove this completely (would look better than a torn piece).

4) I get an error on the rear right license plate light. Swapped bezels / bulbs and the left side wouldn't work (technically, it blinked on/off). I swapped back and the left worked but right didn't... I sanded contacts. I think I have two issues; 1) broken wire on right loom, 2) bulb I bought is wrong type.

5) The 12V charger at the rear of the center console does not have power (the one in the trunk does).

I have already fixed the sun visors and a parking bulb.

Any help / suggestions with any of the above five items would be appreciated.

Thank you!

My son will put less than 5,000 miles a year on (most drives < 5 miles)...it's just gotta get him 2-3 years, 5 would be awesome (he's going to be a senior in high school). I'll get him a new car for college grad.

Main reasons for this car were safety and size. My son is 6'4" so I needed a decent sized car, but not an SUV as I don't want him driving his friends around. I wanted a decent amount of metal around him, 2-tons+ was ideal. Performance was a desire (sub 15 quarter ideally). And, this was really inexpensive if I can get away with minor repairs (under $7k cash).

It's fully drivable as is (well, I just noticed the spare was missing), but I'd like it as good as possible. I could only find two minor scratches sans the rock chips up front. Oh, I think the siren is out too...that's going to be a $60-80 fix (panic doesn't work).

I'll get most this sorted out by his birthday party on the 22nd.

Cheers,
Todd

Actually, there is a spare that's never been used...I was fooled by the empty "bowl" area below the flat piece I lifted. I found it trying to see how old the battery was (it looks new).

Doh =)

Does it have Airmatic suspension? The sudden failure of an Airmatic shock and a crankshaft position sensor going bad are the two problems I've had with my 2005 E500.

Car free at the moment
All E500 models have airmatic. But at 184K miles, I gotta think it's all been replaced once. The big question is when will it all need to be replaced again...

The other question is whether the SBC has been replaced yet. The 10 year warranty may still be in effect, depending on when the car was built and placed into service.

Hey Todd, how did you fix your sun visor? My driver side visor is so hard to move up and down. It feels like it would break if forcefully pushed.

It does have airmatic...I had a Lincoln Mark VIII that had an air suspension fail..but I don't like the sound of "sudden failure." I think I can handle the CPS going out...though it's probably in a tough to reach spot

Hmmm, SBC...that's a new one for me...I'm on my iPhone, I'll need to look that up tomorrow. However, I remember the delivery date was 09/11/04 (9/11 stuck in my head). So, it's under 10-years (barely). The CarFax did not show any major repairs, just regular maintenance and brakes...but maybe CarFax doesn't pick that stuff up.

I took them off (did one at a time). They were extremely stiff and would hang down at nearly a 45 degree angle.

They come off pretty easy, swing it open towards the side window, remove the two Phillips head screws on the fixed end and then they pull out from the little fixed visor.

At that point I extended the extension rod (the end plastic where the screws were) and cleaned all the gunk off. I then carefully rubbed a couple drops of slick 50 lube and worked the rod in / out a few times, then rubbed a few more drops on and in addition to in/out I twisted it (like opening / closing). It got easier after a few minutes. I put it back on and it feels like I imagine it did when it was new.

I started with the passenger side and was pleased so did the drivers side. They're both working great.

And once put it back into position, the "hanging down" was no longer an issue, retracting back nice and snug?

Correct, they move up and down again fine. I may do the passenger side again - it's not COMPLETELY up, but you'd have to intentionally be looking for it not to be perfect to notice (like the one slightly off tile on my back patio...I know its off, but I bet no one else would notice it).
