Few problems with new E320
Just picked mine up yesterday (04 E320) at a great deal. But I have a couple of issues and want to make sure they are really problems.
1) The headlamp *** settings are not backlit at night. On my C230 they are and I think the lamp behind them maybe burnt out. If yours backlit?
2) When the car was off I heard a loud grunt that lasted maybe 4 seconds the other day. Sounded like a broken pump or something. Only happened once while parked still and off in the garage. Really weird.
3) Can't seem to adjust the minutes on the time through command. It only increments in 30 minute increments. Really weird. I can do it through the wheel buttons.
4) CDC seems to make groaning noice while on. Is that

I think the AUX is the coolest hidden option there is.
I have command, can i add Nav or am I sol?
Is the a screen saver mode for the Command? I think it bs that MB would put all that money into the hardware and no software to match.
How do you guys wash black paint so you don't get those circular scratches?
Any tinting pitfalls I should know about?
Thanks
Tan
the groans you are hearing are supposedly normal...
congrats on the new ride
One of the complaints I have had with my E500's auto headlight setting is that there is no way to know when it comes on. My S4 had a little light icon in the speedo that told you. I have noticed in Winter they come on while the sun is still out due to the low angle of the sun late in the day. The speedo and tach needles light up slightly when the headlight are on if that helps.
Enjoy the car!!
Many congrats to you on your new set of wheels.
Looks like others have addressed some of your issues.
Mine ('03 E500 - Aug '03 built) has the same groaning sound for the brakes as well as very high pitch (soft though) whenever the brakes are stepped on. Trying to get my dealer to look into it. So far no luck.
Cheers
p.s. Can you disclose the 'good deal' you got for your '04? Since I am also in S. California, like to know which dealers out there are willing to be reasonable with pricing
and now I am paying $530/mo including all taxes and all.
Bought mine at Laguna (would have preffered Fletcher) from a guy name Jared.
Its a 04 320 with sunroof, real leather, and CDC/comand. Black on Charcoal which is a great combo.

I am drawing a blank (not unusual).."the AUX is the coolers hidden option.." ???
Regarding the Black Paint:
Go to the Detailing Forum and look for:
1. Proper washing techniques (easy to find and easy to do)
2. "Swirls" (..those circular scratches
)3. Check out Zaino and get some ordered. The simplest and easy way to keep it looking good. Most of us have been using it for some time now.
Lots of information on the detailing forum...but probably not so much that will apply to what you want.
I had an Obsidian Black/Charcoal on my pre-nav. Beautiful but horrible to keep up.
I changed to a Tectite Grey/Charcoal on my replacement. Much easier to maintain and looks black most of the time..

Anyone know if this thing can do DVDs somehow?
This is true. Though some owners of E-classes (some of my co-workers) claim they don't have it, I distinctly have the groaning sound for few seconds in addition to a high pitch whine when the brakes get stepped on.
It appears that the brake pump is giving out the groan. I believe another thread here has indications of technical service bulletin on this but I have yet to get my dealer to 'fess' up on this.
Most recent repairs for noises:
Road test car, detected noise from rear axle carrier area. Found rear purge line routed under rear axle carrier transponding noises throughout chassis. Remove rear axle carrier. ReRoute purge lines as factory designed for contact free positioning. OK after repairs
Excessive pump noise from brake system, check sbc system. Found buzzing present. repair sbc system per DTB 42.46/27B dammage code 43102 36. Install pulsation damper, insulate. Bleed system.
023818 Pulsation damper suction hose sbc install
1 001-983-23-10 Felt strip
1 000-431-04-77 Pulsation DA
3 203-995-00-05 Clamp
The groan isn't nearly as loud or frequent. There is still a little vibration/groan feel through the pedal but not nearly as bad. Before I could be stopped and apply the brakes twice and the system would recharge and vibrate. It does it about every 5 to 6 times i depress the pedal.
