what is this thing?

So I was messing around in the car, looking for the cabin air filter (I found it in the engine compartment) and I pulled out the lower dash cover on the passenger side and removed this thing. It was held in by two screws. It has a spring inside of it, and a tether that you can pull to compress the spring. But it wasn't hooked up to anything, so I have no idea what it is and what it does. Any ideas?

That's the damper for the glove box door.

my glove box door will just fall down when you open it. Wonder if mine is also disconnected?

Quick check remove the cover on the right side of the dash you should be able to see if the glove box damper is attached. The end of the damper has a string on it that attaches to the glove box lid. Common problem lid piece breaks causing the damper to be useless. DIY repair remove the under panel on the passenger side http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w211...ml#post7912114

I actually couldnt get the zip tie to stay on both arms, so just ended up attaching the zip tie and chord to one of the arms which worked just fine

Does this fix also add resistance while closing?

Im not sure if it would but I reckon it wont mate coz with my CLK, it only slows it down when openning it. But all this time I didnt even know that my E has this as well so I have to look when I get the time.

No. if anything it will make it easier to close. Its a spring loaded damper, so when the glove box door opens it puts tension on the spring (pulls on the spring). So when you close the glove box door, if anything, the spring will be "helping" you push it closed.

Thanks for that input guys. I'll try and have mine tended to soon! I'll sure miss the aggressive drop of the glove box though! Haha

When we first got our car, my wife opened the glove box door and "slam". She looked at me in shock waiting for me to rip her head off or something. Now it opens real nice!

done this and it was indeed very simple. thanks! now does the same principle apply to the wood trim cover of the cup holder on the center console? I mean the cover itself and not the cup holder.

Performed the fix, but didn't like how my glove box only opened partly. Maybe it's just mine, but I didn't like the idea of pulling my glove box down the rest of the way. Back to the guillotine mod.

Mine went all the way down but softly this time. Try to pull the string back and forth before hooking it up. Might just be a bit rusty.

Mine also went all the way down by itself.
