My W211 Wagon died today....
Driving along with gas gauge at 1/2 full - car suddenly stops running - or so I'm told - Wasn't in the car when it happened. Tried restart - starter chugs along for a few seconds it starts then immediately dies...
The car has just barely 1k miles on it - Anyone had this happen with their W211 (320)? What was the problem? My guess is ignition, which is pretty disappointing for a car that is less then two months old...

if it is a fuel pump, make sure they replace the fuel filter also. when those pumps die, they often fragment a little and can dump some sediment into the fuel line, trapped by the filter, but on a car with 1000 miles, you want a whole new clean setup.

When we got the car - the fuel gauge always read empty - so we took it to the dealer to see what was wrong - Tore out the entire interior to check the fuel level senders - they all checked out normal. Turns out the connection to the gauge cluster was loose - Problem apparently solved. This problem was actually the opposite of the original problem.
One of the fuel level senders died (after 900 +/- miles) and the gauge read 1/2 full when it was really empty. Very relieved that it was not a more severe problem!

it wasnt a failure of a large or costly component but the failure itself could have posed a huge problem to the driver. its about -5 air temp here right now and if i were stranded out on a country road that could be potentially very dangerous aside from being very unpleasant.
i think MB needs to start contracting there electrical components out to japanease manufacturers. :p
