$200 to replace #1 Glow Plug on a 2006 E320 cdi?
Local shop (non-dealer) wants $200 to replace a Cylinder #1 glow plug on my 2006 E320 cdi. Given that I can buy the part for $40 and (at least some) people say this is an easy replacement (assuming you buy the $20-$40 tool to pull off the cable, warm up the engine before trying to un-screw the failed plug and do not use more than 25 NM force to unscrew the bad plug like MB tells you in the service manual)...is this a bit excessive?
That would be $1200 to replace all six. At that rate, I would think that they would at least have the decency to hold a mid-caliber pistol on you while you are paying.
Sheesh!

Have I got a deal for you. $40 for a 6v beru glow plug and the tool to remove the boot. #1 is the easiest to do. Job is 45min tops and that includes the time to drink a 6 pack while doing it.
My #1 went out ~3 years ago, and I bought 2 plugs just in case (the 6v were hard to find then), never had another issue. I sold the W211 so I have parts for sale.

Sounds good.
Sounds interesting. I was about to buy a set of 6 on eBay for $150 and a tool for $20.
Your tool has the right angle to do the #1 cylinder? I know they come in many angles.

NEVER and I mean NEVER go back to that shop! if they have a website with feedback, place a negative feedback so others can see as well, rip offs like them should never be allowed to do business. very cheap and easy DIY.

You may be right
They also charged me $88 to read the error codes when my alternator failed...this was a discounted rate. Then $500 labor to replace the alternator plus $550 for a rebuilt alternator. Alternator should not have failed at 36,000 miles anyway, but, hey, it's a Merc, not a Toyota. That seemed high, but it is too cold here to do it myself. They are good, but have a lock on import repairs in our small Michigan town, and I think they take advantage of that. Merc dealer is 60 miles away and I am sure no cheaper. Still...
