2007 W211 squeek/clunk sound - help?

hi all,

i LOVE my 07 E63 for looks, power, and handling.
recently i got front control arms, engine mounts, etc. replaced.
however, i'm still hearing a regular clunk and squeek from going over rough surface streets.

specifically, i notice some squeeking sounds near the front end.
the indy thought it could be rack/pinion when turning, but i'm hearing it even when going straight.

importantly, i hear a clunk sound going over rough roads and it sounds like it's behind me/driver on the left hand side. the trunk is empty, but could it be spare tire related?

has anyone had similar sounds on their W211s?
tmrw the mechanic said he has a device that can help isolate the exact location of noise, but i wanted to ask the forum in advance in case there's specifics that i should look for.

thx everyone.

Thx...will check out body in trunk thump, lol

Btw, the mechanic's microphone isolated noise in front left.
It wasn't the control arm/ball joint as both are brand new.
Sounds like it could be the rack/pinion...hearing $1800 for parts alone?

If it's in the front, check the sway bar bushings. OE sway bar link is available from dealers who are monitizing excess old parts by selling on EBay. Got mine for $100 from a dealer who would have charged me 2-3 times that at their parts window. Came in a box from "Parts Dept., Name of Dealer, Address of Dealer". Killer.

In the rear, a tha-thwump! when going over a bump can be as simple as just needing a new shock, as mine did. Very evidently the problem, as it was covered in its own oil. When you say it sounds like something in the trunk, that's what I was thinking when mine was doing it, so maybe that's what your problem is. Because of the Airmatic suspension in my car, the dealer wanted over $800 per shock. Bilstein makes the OE shock, and puts the same part in its own box -- $330-ish at Partsgeek.com with a 10 percent discount. My Indy put it in for a reasonable price (we did both sides since you have to take the freakin undercarriage off to get to it).

If you're using an Indy, definitely check Partsgeek for maintenance parts from the OE manufacturers, and don't be afraid to call them with questions. Their people are way knowledgeable and friendly, and often toss in a discount and free shipping if you're willing to make the order right then. My Indy was thinking of getting the part at the dealer, because all his suppliers were afraid to try to figure out for sure which Bilstein shock it needed; the partsgeek guy was just like: "This is the one you need, and it's the same for both sides." And he was right, and it's been smooth sailing for almost a year since we put it in.
