Worst managers of the year

Business Week, Jan. 12 issue, top of the list is Jürgen Schrempp!

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...2/b3865724.htm

Who says Mercedes cannot be at the top of a list? (But maybe not the one they wanted.)

That is horrible, not only are their cars tanking, the management is tanking as well. I truly hope that Mercedes can pull out in time and pull Mitsu and Chrysler out of the deep end.

Schrempp needs a reality check. He blames the US economy for his sales dip during the same period when the Asians cleaned his clock in the US market. I find it sad to watch the brand name erode. Is it possible his board of directors is equally clueless?

Exactly right.... Mercedes troubles are not to be blamed on just one man.... Only his position makes him the one to blame. Every one, including the men (or women) on the assembly line is to blame as far as I'm concerned.....

What seems worst of all this is that mercedes may have tried to raise its profits (sacrificing quality and reliability) to try compensate for the other losing divisions. Even if that had worked (it clearly hasn't) in the short term, they are risking damaging the brand image, perhaps the most valuable asset Mercedes has. If they go through 5-10 more years of crappy reliability, the brand value may be almost gone. There are still people around who once owned the tanks Mercedes used to build. But in 10 years we could have generations of people who owned unreliable mercedes and that will damage the brand tremendously.

What clearly HAS happend since he took over is that Mercedes keeps flooding the market with tons of models. Why this new CLS or whatever it is? Why not concentrate on making the E bullet-proof? Sometimes you ought to look back and see what go you there.

In a lot of companies, when management is bad, it is bad all throughout, and you need to totally clean house in order to change that. Be afraid if they bring in one of those turnaround CEO's.

Yes MBR129, in the words of the famous management consultant Peter Drucker, do what got you there. If MB would concentrate on what made them successful in the past, it should get them back on track for the future. Quality, quality control, and engineering are what we expect and have found lacking of late. I know that my expectations of a $50k car are much higher than for a $20k car. I don't expect a Kia to be that quiet, have good handling characteristics, excellent reliability, and good resale values but I expect my W211 to have these characteristics and more.
