E350 vs E550 gas mileage

Just wondering how much better the mileage is for an e350 vs an e550. I' been averaging 27.5 mpg from my e550 with regular daily commute runs of 29-30 mpg common (31.5 high). The car has 164k miles so I'm looking for a replacement in the near future and like the w211 styling. Just wondering the fuel savings on going with an e350 (or even, gulp, a diesel).

Don't gulp at the diesel. It has lots of power. I'd take one over a gas 350 - no offence to the 350. That's pretty impressive gas mileage.

Diesels do crank out the tq numbers - no doubt about that. What kind of mileage were you getting from your '06?

I could easily get 33MPG at 75-80MPH even with big E55 wheels&tires. I got it into the 40's once driving about 60MPH (I don't usually drive for economy) Even beating it hard around town I couldn't generate a 15.9 like lemon. Now my C63 would be hard pressed to get 15.9MPG on the interstate.

Those stock 16" wheels were always good for a few MPG. If they fit on your car they might help fuel economy.

That's what you get for living in the city. With a 24 average mpg have you ever been on the freeway?

33 mpg is only 10% better than what I commonly get which is a zero cost saving after the extra cost of diesel over premium. But at 40 mpg, maybe. My commute is 750 miles per week so filling the tank is getting old.

Lol that 24 average mph includes a 100 mile round trip from San Fran to San Jose almost every week for 8 month out of the year..

In the city I can easily go as far as 10 miles in about one hour..
