Parick, is this SW update only related to the AGW, or is it the update that was slated for March that address other issues as well? If it’s not only for the AGW, what other issues are covered?

Sometimes we get full information about SW-updates (e.g. all issues that are fixed with CD 2.0 for Audio 50 APS or all issues that are fixed with the Comand 2.0/2.5 service-CD's), but sometimes not.

The issues that I am aware of that are fixed by the mentioned software for the AGW (this means we have no detailed information about what it should fix, but this may still come), are that crackling "static-like" sound and some systems that still shut off (most of them were fixed by previous updates).

The SW-version is 43/03 and every dealer should be able to check this easily.

*Update*

Just picked up my car this morning. Dealer advised the SW43/03 update was already in my car. They found a loose wire in the Command/Radio and advise that should be the fix. We'll see in the next couple of days.

'02 S500 (fixed/Tranny Leak)
'04 E500 (fixed/Static)

Now our '01 E320 4matic (Check Engine Light) is at the dealer...hopefully fixed by tomorrow.

Spoke too soon. When I was going to lunch the static came back and it stayed on for about 1 minute. The Audio Display on the center guage cluster showe 2 dashes (--). I then scrolled to "tel" and also showed 2 dashes. I went straight to the dealer and spoke with the foreman mechanic. I'll be dropping off the car again tomorrow morning.

I doubt this. How old is your car exactly?

After reading your info on this forum I was somewhat skeptical about it too when they told me this morning. I picked up my car on December 24, 2003 in Chicago so I figured my built date was possibly 1 month beforehand......sometime in early/mid October, 2003. Is there something besides "SW43/03 Update" I can tell them tomorrow to check regarding the latest update as they claim it has the latest update. I understand the "newest" update is available January 30, 2004 in the U.S. but what should I advise my dealer to look for.

Thanks!

I just called my dealer's foreman mechanic and he advised they already have the SW43/03 update at their shop (that's what he's claming) and they claim they check to see if my car had this when the car was in yesterday. He will check my car again tomorrow to make sure my car has this update and go from there.

Is there any way for us to determine our software versions for any (preferably all) of the systems in the cars ?

There is the diagnostic mode of the COMAND system which on 2003 E's and most of their other MB cars seems to be accessed by pressing MUTE+1+3. I've tried it several times on my 2004 E with the new Nav style head unit, and I was not able to get in to the diagnostic mode. In those screens you should be able to find out the version.

Maybe Patrick knows how to get in?

Eagerly awaiting the answer, Lionhead. My '04 also has the undesirable "RICE KRISPIES Package" and I was just told that the software update to uninstall it will be available early next month. If it's already known that the upgrade won't work, I'd sure like to know.

Since I first had the static problem I've been turning off the COMMAND system abd turning it back on after startup and so far no static. I guess I'll deal with it this way till the patch comes thru. Anyone else doing this ?

Nope.....when I picked up my car the dealer *finally* admitted there is a SW update on 1/31/04 (U.S.) in which I've been telling them all along. They told me to call them sometime this week to see if they received the SW upgrade and to setup an appointment. I will probably give them a call later this week. I've driven/started up the car only once in the last 9 days and no static for that one time. You might want to give your dealer a call to see if they have the latest SW update.

Has anyone had a successful repair of the "radio static" problem? I have been unable to get any answers out of my dealer about software updates. I tried talking to MBUSA and that has been a complete waste of time - they are not even aware of a problem or a software update.

Thanks for any info...

I have had the same problem, and assumed the problem was a software issue. My local dealer (in Canada), called the Canadian HO contact, and was told to replace the Nav system. That was done 2 days ago. Voila! No static.

I got the software update last week and have not had the static problem since.

My hands feee phone microphone stopped working, but (I assume) thats another issue.

Man is this COMAND system a joke. I feel like I am doing Quality Control for MBUSA without getting paid for it. Today I asked by dealership to start the process with MBUSA to reacquire my vehicle.

The only thing I can think of that would make my COMAND have so many issues is that I got all the system options - CD Changer, NAV, Integrated Phone, and (at one tme, since been removed) voice recognition. I would think the complexity of the system increases dramatcially with each added component.

Everytime I have static...

I have had cell phones in addition to the factory one in the car at the same time. Could this be the problem?

Dear Lion Head,

Did you really get rid of the static problem after the software upgrade??? Mine is OK so far after the jump start of battery.

BTW, why did you call yourself Lion Head??

stevenW211: It's too early to see if the static is gone as the SW update was done yesterday. In the next couple of weeks, I'll see if the static comes back.

We have a 120 gallon fishtank with fancy goldfish. One type of fancy goldfish that we have are called Lionheads..thus my screenname.

Thanks,

After suffering through 3 1/2 months of "radio static" and nav system crashes, the dealer updated the software on my 2004 E320 last week. I have now gone 7 days without the problems recurring - that is by far the longest period I have gone in this car without static or other command problems. Prior to the software upgrade I was literally having problems on an almost daily basis (sometimes multiple times per day).

It looks like the software update solved the problem (I hope I am not tempting fate with that comment!)

The service ticket which is somewhat cryptic says "control module- perform version coding" and "audio gateway- performed audio gateway software upgrade". No software version is listed.

This forum has been a great resource, with the information that was available here I was able to push the dealer into the right direction for the solution. Thanks everyone!

Had same problem - dealer just downloaded software

Dealer just called a minute ago and told me they fixed it by a software upgrade. "It wasn't 43/03, by any chance?" I asked. He was freaked. "How did you know?"

Hopefully it works. Pretty soon we will fix our cars ourselves just like we do our computers - some support person in India will email us a software upgrade thru the computer; we'll download it onto a special flash card and plug the card into the car's jack, thus downloading the software.
