Rough shifting from 1-2, HELP!

Hey guys. I've been looking all over this and other forums trying to figure this out and I'm lost. I bought a used 2008 E350 with 80xxx miles. In S or C mode from 1 to 2 it stutters and noticeably vibrates the steering wheel. Sometimes in 3rd to 4th also. Nothing crazy but you can definitely feel it. Its never got stuck in a gear, just the vibrating. I've read all I need is a software update to a new transmission. I'm just trying to put some light on this before I take it in. I appreciate the help.

When was the transmission last serviced? It should get done ever 39k miles.
if it hasn't been done get it done yet it really should be done if you DIY it can be done with approved fluids for under $100.

+1 First place to start.

Here is a good DIY tech article for transmission fluid change. You can read up on other transmission services here.

Gburgos1387, PM me your email address. I can provide you some info but this really requires professional diagnostic tools. An OBD2 reader *might* assist but don't pin your fortune on it.

Actually the first step in transmission diagnosis is to verify that fluid level is correct, if so pull the drain plug and catch some of the fluid in a cup. Inspect fluid for debris. If no debris is found perform short test, if' debris is found do a glycol test and the result will be right there in front of you as to what your issue is, only if you have debris do this step. From there you need to decipher weather you have a .6 or .9 trans. If you have a .9 trans you need to determine what control unit version you have, nag1 or nag2 vgs ect... could be a conductor plate or valve body... Don't just start with a trans service, because if that doesn't resolve the issue you or whomever is doing the actual work is going to be salty when you have to drop that pan again and replace the conductor plate and or valve body depending what trans/software you have or if the trans needs to be replaced. STAR is your best friend if none of that helps because you will be able to look at adaptation values ect...

On the 722.9 (which is what he should have) you don't have a dipstick tube to check the fluid level so the only real way to check it is to drain it or if your lucky you might be able to get it up to operating temperature and crack the bolt loose and see if fluid comes out just like you would do in a fill. The problem with that is you don't get much information on the status of the fluid inside.
A good place to start would be check for codes in star, visual inspection of engine/trans mounts, Driveline and for leaks. If all looks good and no codes are found and trans hasn't been serviced within 39K it is cheap to do and dirty fluid can cause tons of transmission issues.
The issues with the valve body and conductor plate were mostly gone by 08 unless you have a very early 08 and you would be getting a CEL for most of those issues. But checking for updates to the software would be a good idea if you do connect the car to star.
