SRS from seat side airbag high resistance fault
Purchased a 2004 E320 from private party over the weekend. It had the SRS light on. I believed it was most likely the passenger seat sensor malf. Took it to an indie shop and he said that was probably it. But upon testing, nope, not the pasenger seat sensor.
The test indicates that BOTH side airbags are showing high resistance. Upon inspection, both side airbag covers have been opened. Bags are inside but I don't know what they are supposed to look like if they haven't deployed.
Anyone have a pic of an UNDEPLOYED side airbag with the cover off? Mine appear to have the bag just stuffed in there any which way.
I understand there's a "plug kit" from the dealer to solve a high resistance problem with the seat airbags, but I'm going to check into the airbags first. I got that bad feeling...

Ok, after looking at eleventy billion sites and reading more words than in War & Peace, I've come to the conclusion that SRS airbags come sealed from the factory and if they are "open" then they've been deployed at some point.
So, I guess it's off to the salvage yard for me.

One other quick question:
HOW do I get the exact part number for my specific vehicle (other than the dealership)? From what I understand, putting in an airbag which isn't the EXACT part number for my car may cause it to deploy when the battery is hooked up again. Even if it fits perfectly otherwise.
Is there a site I can go to for part numbers based on vin numbers?
