06 E320 CDI noise(accelerating)

Hello all,
I have checked this forum and online and I have not found anything like this. I have an 06 Mercedes E320 cdi. It has 414k but runs very good however I am having a noise during acceleration. It is intermitten but usually happens during low speeds during slow acceleration. When I give it quicker acceleration it goes away. I would describe the sound as a hole in a muffler or the sound of those nopi type cars with the loud mufflers yet not that loud, or maybe like a piece of metal shielding is vibrating at low speeds(but nothing is loose under the car). The engine sound perfect and this does not happen in park even if I rev the engine. The engine does not shake or make any noises, this sound seems to come from under the car in the front. I just purchased this car a couple of weeks ago but this is not normal. There is no noise during hwy driving. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated. I am excited about having this awesome car and joining this forum

Welcome to the forum. My cdi developed a similar noise at 120k. I had a big right rear tire blow out and think it rattled something loose in the muffler. I can tap each muffler with my hand and hear something rattling. Mine is more noticeable when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd, under light acceleration. If, like you, I am harder on the acceleration, I do not hear the noise. Also, when I first started the car, I would hear something rattle, sounding like it was under the front of the car. I no longer hear that noise. I am just hoping that the sound is not something more serious, like something with the turbo.
Good luck in finding the noise.

thanks Mike, yes it def. sounds like the same issue. I noticed yesterday that it is from 1st-2 and 2-3. Hoping to get some troubleshooting ideas from here so I don't have to take it to the dealer. I will take a look at the mufflers and see if those are loose just to make sure. Thanks for the response, it is encouraging

Update
I have a helper put the car in drive with e brake and slowly give it gas. It is clear that the vibration noise is coming from the trans fluid pan. It is over due for trans service after looking at the carfax service records. Thinking of a service and replacing the conductor plate while I'm at it. Any thoughts? Thanks

Thanks for sharing. I will check mine out, but I still believe that it is the muffler. How did you determine the sound from the transmission? Did you use a scope or just heard the sound from the transmission?

While my wife was giving it gas with the e brake on I got close to the noise. It was apparent that it was coming from the trans pan. I reached under and put my hand on the pan to make sure and it was vibrating when it made the sound and not vibrating when the sound stopped. Low tech..I know

Chris. Putting your foot on the brake pedal gave me a thought when I washed my car this morning. In reverse with my foot on the brake and I bring the motor up to 1k rpm, I can hear the rattle noise. It has to be right at the 1k rpm level. In drive (forward), I cannot make the noise happen. The only safe thing to do is like Plutoe said, put the car up on a lift and see exactly where the noise is coming from. I will stop by my indie sometime this week to see if they can take a look at it.

Mike, yours def. seems to be something with the muffler/exhaust. Let me know what u turn up. Plutoe, That is an option on my proverbial table, but my intention is to see if I can tackle it myself without the need for paid help. If I can't trouble shoot it myself, then I intend to seek professional help. As much as I like to tinker, I should look at getting my own lift of which you speak
Cheers guys

Well Chris, mine is fixed! I stopped by my indie late in the afternoon and they were able to take a look at it. It was a cracked bracket that is directly behind the differential and connects the left/right exhaust pipes. I could not believe that a crack would cause the noise, but it did. The tech had to weld it back together.
This most likely happened when my right rear tire blew out. I was on the interstate and it was raining and did not want to pull over to the side, so I think the tire flapping must have hit the bracket and cracked it. Good luck with yours.

Great news Mike! I went to check mine in hopes of the same thing. Alas, it was not to be. On mine the bracket is not there. Looks like it was removed but you could see where is once was. Oh well, I'll push on, thanks for the help

How many miles are on this thing? Have your engine mounts ever been replaced?

funny you asked Cmriv, I was checking that last night and It looks like one side has original mount whereas the opposite side looks newer. I am also about to check the transmount as well. There are 415000 miles on this diesel beast. It is in surprising good condition inside and out and runs like a champ except the annoying noise.

I checked the transmission mount and it looks brand new. Drivers side motor mount looks oem and the passenger side looks like it has so miles on it but not old. I ordered the drivers mount and will pick it up today and install tonight or tomorrow. Still waiting on the conductor plate.

All i'm going to say is- something fragile as engine mounts always try and replace in pairs, new looking or not. If you replace in pairs there won't be any question later down the road- I actually recommend replacing engine and trans mount all at the same time.... Your vehicle though-i would just sleep better at night knowing all engine suspension components are new and matching.

I have a friend that bought aftermarket engine mounts for his 124- needless to say he paid like 150 bucks off ebay. Drove vehicle 28 miles and bought the oem MB mounts for 3x the price... Never heard about him complaining again

I don't disagree CM, the parts house had the drivers mount at another store so it will be transferred today. The passenger side was on back order so I will put it in as soon as it comes in. On a different note, I put a small bracket in place on the exhaust behind the deferential where it was missing. The issue that Mike had where his was broken causing noise. Interestingly the noise is even more intermittent and not near as loud. I may be on the right track with the exhaust causing the issue. However this car has alot of miles and like you said, I would sleep better knowing the mounts where all fresh since I am not sure when if ever they were replaced. Thanks for your input, it is seriously appreciated.

No problem! You could also get a dead blow, and whale on your entire exhaust of course while its on jack stands....

just to follow up for posterity, I changed both motor mounts which smoothed things out. The issue however was a small bracket on the exhaust/converter. the tip where it bolts on was cracked in two which was causing the vibration at certain rpm's. Thanks for the input guys.

That is great news. I am pretty sure that is the same exact spot mine was cracked. It was the part that is welded to the exhaust pipe, so the only fix was to weld the bracket as you have to change out the entire exhaust just for the bracket. So far, mine has been quiet.
