any DIY write-ups on front drive shaft?

I need a new front drive shaft on my 04 E320 4-matic wagon. Does the rack and pinion need to come out to replace it? Drive shaft going bad is a common problem?

Front driveshafts have about 1/2 million miles life expectancy, but the boots on them don't last much past 10 years mark.
I did pictorial for boots replacement just couple weeks ago, meaning you have to find it once you put some effort.

The flange that holds the u joint broke off, not sure how, since I bought this car like that and the rack and pinion are off. My question is does the rack and pinion have to come off to get the drive shaft off? Trying to figure out why the rack and pinion is off the car

Just found your pictorial, that's a cv axle, that's not my issue, my issue is the front drive shaft

Sorry for misreading the question.
Drive-shafts on MB last for long time, that is why did not even think about it.
This is what I found about it. It is for W210 but should be almost identical.

The answer to your question is NO, however prior to starting the job you may want to put the car on a lift and inspect the F and R drive shaft flex discs and or the intermediate bearing and determing which part is failing. because I doubt the drive shaft itslef is failing.

Would Plutoe know something about cars, he would know the front driveshaft has no flex disks.
Thanks for entertainment.

Front prop shaft is a simple bolt on bolt off job no need to remove anything else. It's not that uncommon for the front prop shaft to snap on the universal joint connection due to lack of any way of lubricating the joint

ok, thats what happened, the prop shaft broke off from the u-joint. Now, do W211 E320 and E500 4-matic share the same front end parts?

what link is that? id love to see the diagram for the steering too, so pretty much 03-06 E320 4-matic is the same unless the 07-09 E350 4-matic is the same?
