2005 E500 Wagon

Ventilation System Stink

So now that the air freshener stink has started to clear out of my car there's a kind of pungent stink that is especially strong when I first start up the car.

I don't want to perfume it into submission I want to fix the problem.

Is there a way to do this. I assume either the A/C isn't draining or something is contaminated in the ventilation system.
