Replace Valve lifters

Hi, I am hearing ticking noise from driver side of the engine. it sounds like Valve lifter/ lifters are noisy. I am searching info for this job for few days however I was unable to find.

Can someone please post info or guide me on re and re of the valve lifters also the torque specifications for Valve train bolts. I drive 2006 E500 4matic.

Thanks,

Before you jump on the job, triple check.
I was helping one of the forum members with same issue, what seems to be common on 320 engine and after long search and listening it turn out to be one of the purge valve, or something similar stupid.
Hopefully he will come with better explanation.

Don't be mis guided\directed or confused with the purge control valve HS.

The purge valve only functions when the engine is at 80C and at that the periods of opening and closing varies in time\lenght and with a way different sound.

Valve lifters are regular whether cold or at 80C!

Don't be thrown off by spammers---when in doubt use a sound probe!!

Thanks Konigstiger and Plutoe for your help like always. After searching thru the workshop manual, I believe I found the Torque specs for the valve train. I found the valve train (Camshaft bearing bridge) uses 2 different bolts M7X45 and M7X84 Bolts.

Spec for M7X45 is 15 NM and for bolt M7X84 is 10 NM at stage 1 and rotate 90 Degree at stage 2.

Can you please confirm if this info is correct. I was not able to get the process for changing the Valve lifters.

I am pretty sure the noise is coming from Valve Lifters as it is coming from inside the Valve cover. I hope its not something bigger.

These are the instructions i found and it says I have to remove the Timing chain tensioner before removing Cam bridge so my question is Do i have to remove the timing chain tensioner??

1 Remove cylinder head covers.
2 Position crankshaft to 0 degrees after ignition TDC of cylinder 1
NOTE: Engine must not be rotated backwards.
3 Remove chain tensioner
4 Take off camshaft bearing bridges
5 Use a 2 mm drift to press compensation element of the relevant cylinder out of the roller rocker arms

NOTE: Installation: The disk in the roller-type rocker arm at the top must face downwards with slots towards the compensation element Compensation elements which have not been replaced, must be re-installed at the same point.

6 Install in the reverse order

I found these detailed attached instructions on replacing the camshaft however I am only replacing the the Valve lifters by removing the Camshaft bearing bridge. I do feel comfortable replacing my valve lifters (with these instructions) so I hope I don't need those Cam locating tools as i am not replacing the camshaft??

I believe I have to carefully install few tie wraps (Zip ties) between sprocket and chain to hold them together. I am also thinking of replacing the timing chain tensioner since I am removing it and about 160,000 Miles on it.

It is possible to have a stretched chain with no cel-have you checked timing on this thing? I just can't believe your lifters are going bad-not that i dont believe you but it is super rare to see in the M112/113 motors. Good luck!

Hope you have a new tensioner.

For what it is worth you should probably roll you a new chain in anyways if in fact your timing is dead on.... since you have everything timed and apart, i think its a 250 dollar part or so...

I believe may be 1 or 2 lifters are bad. The noise is coming from inside the driver side valve cover only not the front of the engine also the passenger side Valve cover is nice and quite too. it is noisy on cold start and the noise almost go away once the car is fully warm like after 5 minutes.

My car has about 160,000 miles on it so I decided to replace all of lifters on driver side only since I got good deal on Ebay for 12 of the lifter. I called 3 Mercedes dealers parts and they all said the same that they are selling the exhaust lifter for all. they all said intake lifter part # 1130500080 is replaced with the exhaust lifter part # 1130500380 and now I will also replace the timing chain tensioner too since I am removing it as it is also around $100.

How did this work out for you?
I am considering to check and replace lifters, since I have some ticking noise and I am replacing the cover gaskets (again).
Did you get by without the special tool?
I cant seem to find the E18 adapter anywhere anyway. Would a normal E18 not work just as well?
