Check engine light not working

Hello all, it's sounds like a good thing but my check engine light is not working. I just failed emissions in NJ on my 08' E320 Bluetec. I wasn't able to find anything on this in the forum. It also failed for "MIL Command Status" does anyone know what that might be?
Thank you, NSP

MIL = Maintenance Indication Light (CEL), they should have provided you an inspection report to help identify reason for failure.

They weren't overly helpful, They said to bring it to my mechanic to have it diagnosed.

Is it just a standard bulb behind the cluster?

Depending on in-service date (ISD) repair may be covered. IC is covered under Emissions Warranty On-Board Diagnostics for 8 years/80,000 miles. If you do not know ISD, dealer can provide this info.

You might still want to check your state laws.
I know in CA emission parts are covered for 10 years and I think unlimited miles.
Looks to me that you need to take the car to a dealer for at least scanning the codes.

I am somewhat confused---are you saying that every time you go to start the car and the cluster does it's status check the MIL or CEL icon does not go on and off-----yes or no ??

Or if it does go on and off during the status check---and your car failed then you are asking -------why didn't the CEL or MIL go and stay on??

That's correct, the light has never illuminated whether by code or at start up. Does anyone know of this is a light bulb that I can change?

I am still messing with this, I had a Mercedes mechanic do a light test with the Star system and the CIL still didn't illuminate. Any ideas? Should I just buy an eBay instrument cluster and swap?

Will any w211 cluster work? Will it need to be programmed? Is the mileage saved in the Computer? Thank you!!

Members report that other cluster works just fine once you swap original chip holding the mileage.
