abs inop?

Hey guys I own a 03 E500 and today I finally had a chance to change out my upper and lower ball joints I read several posting's here and several other websites that advised removing the speed sensor to prevent damage once I got done I started the car and the abs inop light came on i'm trying to figure out what would cause this problem? on the back side of the spindle the sensor mounts up with a allen key how tight should this be? I didn't want to go too tight where it would damage the sensor or the plastic bracket some advice would be helpful thx

Did you disconnect the sensor or simply remove the sensor from the bracket??

I unbolted the allen bolt then I moved the plastic back cover out of the way I twisted the sensor while pulling it out so it would come out smoothly then I placed it up out of the way then reversed after I completed the replacement of the upper and lower ball joints the only thing I recall while doing to ball joints I turned the key to the run position to get a better angle with the ball joint press and when i reinstalled the sensor I cleaned all the dirt and grit off with a paper towel how tight does the sensor have to be? I backed of the bolt a lil bit because I didn't want to damage the sensor of plastic cover do I need to reset the sensor? let me know thx

Once you turned the key you applied voltage to the sensor and because the sensor was not in position---you created a fault-----once the car is together----yes erase the fault. However your OBD reader may not be able to do that--you may need better diagnostics or wait 10 drive cycles to see if the fault moves out of current status!!

When I got the car back together the abs light and esp fault still remained on from last night through today would it help if I disconnected the battery for a short period of time will it delete the code for the abs and esp fault? how tight is the sensor supposed to be? i was trying not to tighten it too much to prevent breaking it

I can appreciate that when you make a mistake you look for the cheapest out, however on MB's it dosent work that way----by disconnecting the battery, you don't remove the faults, but yes the dash light will go out---however how do you propose starting and using the car? You need someone with diagnostics to remove the fault!but leave it on if you want!!

Auto manufacturs don't use terms like tight, very tight or loose. The standard is torque and in your case the torque for the sensor bolt is 25Nm--however that's what is recommended--feel free to use what ever you want!!

Plutoe thx for the help I figured out after looking at the opposite side I mounted the sensor on top of the backing plate and it prevented it from going in the required distance and after I put it back together the right way there is no abs or esp faults I really appreciate the help and advice

Speed sensor

I have an 2004 e320 4matic w211. I recently had some trouble and diagnosed the problem to being my abs sensors. In trying to replace the rear sensors both were lodged in the housing and would not break free without breaking the sensor. So now both are still in the housing with virtually no easy way to get them out. Are there any recommendations for what I can do to get them out

With the front sensors I twisted them a little and they came right out no problems. I could imagine if you live up north somewhere it could be a problem with all the rust thankfully I live in Texas maybe wd-40 could help pulling them out
