MP3 on 2004 E Class
where can we get that software upgrade? it will be very nice if we can play MP3 CD in the car. 1 CD is enough i guess. it could load around 100 MP3 songs.

Why are US owners out of luck? The US NAV Command is a DVD...... Same as europe.
The Nav/Entertainment system is broken up into several parts.
1) Head Unit - Single Slot Device
2) 6 CD Changer - Concealed In-Dash and
3) Nav Unit.
The Nav unit is in the rear of the car and uses a single DVD Disk to show mapping and Point of Interest locations.
The Head unit however is where we americans get the shaft. In Europe, the head unit is a DVD player as well as a single slot CD player. With the aforementioned firmware update, it will be able to handle MP3 playback as well. In the US, we get a CD player and nothing more. I have no idea why this is the case but i have confirmed this many many times. I first noticed this when a people in the UK talked about getting a video manual for the W211 in addtion to the standard paper manual.
The US got excluded from this bounty as well.
Anyway, i hope my explanation has cleared up any confusion you had about the Nav/DVD/MP3 situation.
Cheers!
Thanks!
Just need a clarification....the U.S. Version doesn't have the DVD Player/TV In Motion is because it is illegal in the U.S. to have movies/TV shown in the front compartment. Just wondering if this is correct.
Thanks!
It's illegal in the UK too. The COMAND system switches of the video image once you get to about 2mph and replaces it with a notification telling you that it has removed the pic to stop you from being distracted.

It may be something to do with the fact you get your cars for about 30% less than our equivalent models??? They need to balance their books somehow.
.
So can anyone say with any certainty whether the US spec cars would need just a firmware upgrade to play MP3's, or would we actual hardware to do what is required. If it is only firmware, then I am hopeful that we will be able to get the MP3 feature for us. But I somehow doubt it
.
The device used to decode MP3 audio is the same one used to decode MPEG-2 audio (DVD Video's audio track).
It is possible that 2k5 models will have DVD capablities back into the headunit... whow knows.
My personal opinions is that I hope that will be the case, then we can all retro our car (it may cost a lot of $$... but at least will be do-able)

I agree... but isnt it funny how on just Saturday, the MB drone told me that yes 2005 models would have the mp3 option working.. sigh..... I know he is full of ****..
They did it once, but i doubt they'll do it again.
if its not possible.. I guess we can always stick an ipod in the aux jack.... not as clean, but still cool, and inexpensive.
I have a 30GB iPod plugged into my AUX-IN jack and I listen to tunes all day. :-)
Cheers!

It's very good point. iPod of European edition has lower sound level and nobody could give a clear hack. So, the same thing can be for MB unit, when there is no way to change firmware to European version.
I have learned to be pessimistic with MBUSA.
