ESP light on

Hello Everyone, Just installed new rubber on my 2007 E352 Sport, took it to the dealer for an alignment ant they told me that the right tie rod need replacing at a cost of $488. I decided to replace the tie rod myself:genuine MB parts online $133. About 3 days after leaving the dealer the ESP inoperative came on so I though the repair and that the alignment will take care of the. So I made the repair that took the car back for the alignment. I don't think the dealer liked that because upon completing the alignment the did not give me a recommended repair for the ESP light on. So I have to find the problem myself. I have been looking at OBDII scanners so i can pull the fault code, i know the best scanner is the MB Star but its to expensive but I did run across a scan to called Launch Tech CRP123 Scanner that is suppose to be able to do the job. Has anyone used this before? or would I come out better taking it to an indy. Any help would be appreciated

OBDII scanner won't get the codes you're looking for: It'll only read engine emissions codes. I don't know about the Launch Tech you're referring to, but if I had the scratch and wanted a relatively inexpensive tool to scan about every code the car can throw I'd likely get the icarsoft MB II scanner for a couple hundred $$. The I version is a bit cheaper if that's an issue; II is the updated latest and greatest. The scanner platform is dedicated to Benz.

Though the ESP indicator may activate if steering is a few degrees out, it is most likely the steering angle sensor, a common complaint; it is installed in the steering wheel of course and not a bad DIY job. I recently started receiving the same error and intend to replace the sensor in the next few days. There are detailed videos online. As sensor is around $200.

Yea, I'm thinking also that it is the steering angle sensor, just replaced the right inner and outer tie rods than took it to have an 4 wheel alignment done through it would solve that but it didn't. I am hoping it is a speed sensor but I need to pull the fault code to be sure. I'll spend 100 bucks at the dealer or indy so I might as well invest is a scanner. Invested in one for my 2003 Silverado 273 k miles 4 years ago haven't take to repair shop since and it runs great. Do you have links for the video

Sorry for the delay in my response, it's been a few days since I checked this forum. I sent you a link, check your messages.

Though I have not ordered a steering angle sensor yet, I had wheel alignment done across the border in BC yesterday (a little over a year since the last time) and it was out; I intend to wait a few days to see if the ESP error message returns. My car is lowered and I need to keep a more frequent check on alignment issues, especially with my aggressive driving style, though roads here in WA are definitely better than back in NJ, full of pot holes, where I relocated from last year.

Another common problem is the ABS sensor. It can be easily damaged when doing suspension work.

So far so good and no ESP light on yet. I'm still keeping a watch.

I re-lowered the rear before alignment following new tires installation (I had to raise the rear following a blowout during a coast to coast run last year when I had to install 165/30/19 tires which were taller)

The iCarsoft scanner works great. Gave me a code for a defective Stop Light Sensor, Purched the sensor from MB dealer for $35 15 minutes install and no more ESP malfution. Also gave me code for manifold problem. I recommend this tool for all DIYers.

I have one also. It's about the best you can get for that price range. The next step up in functionality is going to be about $1,000 more.

That is excellent that it was not the steering position sensor; perhaps I need a new scanner . I ordered the switch, just in case.

Update: Brake light switch arrived and installed yesterday, five minute fix. I'll report back if the ESP message returns at all.

Update: The ESP message returned while I was driving and passing a vehicle at around 70mph and hit a slight bump in the road; switching the car off and back on clears the fault. The car is lowered and though I'm guessing, it is possible the YAW sensor is effected when the rear suspension rebounds beyond a certain point, considering the car is already pretty low. There are no codes on my code reader, however I'll ask MB to check it when I take it for an oil change.

You might consider one of these:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2014-Cost-Effective-Mb-Star-C4-for-both-Cars-and-Trucks-with-Xentry-2014-01-Version/1783909054.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.2.9Irpkc&ws_ab _test=searchweb201556_10,searchweb201602_5_10017_5 07,searchweb201603_2&btsid=d4d756cd-76a3-45f9-b1ee-34db671bd1af

(edit: it would appear alibaba blocks direct link to this item & instead just puts you on their generic splash page but search for 'MB Star C4' & you will see many listings. The seller I went with is Shen Zhen OEMScan Tool Co., Ltd..)

I couldn't be happier with mine. Considering dealer will charge $150+ for a single SDS session, this item will pay for itself in about 3x of use. Mine has paid for itself many times over & continues to earn it's keep. I can't recommend it enough to anybody who has a MY 2000 or newer MB, JMHO! My car attempted to take ESP/ABS offline which disables cruise-control on a recent 5k mile journey. A 15 minute session at a road side rest area & I was back in action w/ full functionality restoritized!

Well I just got the ESP inoperative message. Used the X431 Launch which came with 2 free codes for specific manufacturers. About $56 now on aliexpress but when I got it earlier, it was cheaper, price seems to change all the time. We'll see how long that keeps working.

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-A...c-ed9de860c708

Anyway, I got a 9334 error code which says the N49 steering angle sensor is defective. Mine seems to come on all time every few days. There's a youtube video that shows you how to replace the sensor and there's also a thread on the AMG forum where they claim you can just clean the sensor and that will also work. Rather than take it apart twice, I think I'm just going to go with a new sensor and keep the old one. Not really sure why cleaning it is supposed to fix it.

Well I got the steering angle sensor and I went to get the tools. Picked up a long handle T30 Torx for the clockspring in the steering wheel. I made sure it would fit by sticking it in the hole. The screw was a little loose so I tightened it up. Now the light hasn't come on in the last week since I did that and before it was coming on every day.

Now I've got a spare steering angle sensor in case it's just a fluke and comes back on.
