Strange sounds coming from the garage

LOL, I'm in the mud room last night which is attached to our garage. All of a sudden I hear this whistling type noise coming from the garage. I go in the garage, stand there for a few seconds and I hear it again. It sounds like a little tiny toy train whistling! I figure one of the kids has left a toy on or something. So I keep listening and every minute or so, I hear the same couple of "toots" WTF, that' no toy, that's coming from the car. I open the hood and listen. Sure enough I hear it even more loudly. I can't isolate it, other than the engine bay.

I can't wait to see the dumb *** look on my service advisor's face when I try to explain this one. Why am I so sure the response will be --- "No problem found".

Wasn't there a time when you got a higher quality vehicle relative to the amount you spent. I'm convinced that higher cost cars these days, just gets you more "stuff" which needs constant mainteance. This is fun, right?

That's a room you set aside to throw mud at pictures of Halata and the boys when something goes wrong with your expensive benz. .....Tough crowd!

IluvS500 - If serious question, what's a mud room? It's a buffer or pre entry room where you remove wet or soiled shoes, boots and clothing before actually entering your home.

cte430 - Don't have a clue as to what this noise could be but I'm sure you're right on the money in the first round coming away as "no problem found". I would suggest cutting to the chase and immediately request the assistance of the shop foreman or MBUSA rep.

I have a new '04 E320 and have the same noise. I don't have airmatic. It sounds like it is coming from the area of the brakes.

I would expect it is the SBC brakes bleeding themselves a little bit. I know it does it on mine a little bit, but I can't say whether it continues for some time aftewards, and it is not loud.

CTE430,

You are right about the cost versus the goodies that you might not need. Of course we could all find that old 1950 Ford with a flat-head V-8, get it restored and drive without any technology. Some technology is what we are asking for but the cost for cutting-edge technology has gotten very expensive and then we have to go through the teething pains. On the other hand, I feel much more comfortable knowing that my wife has one of the best and safest cars to drive. She was hit a couple of years ago in a W202 and the policeman told her she was lucky to be in a Mercedes; that she probably would have been seriously injured in another car.

Noise
I have noticed the same noise coming from my E500. It is not the Airmatic sound, it is a much higher pitched electronic sound. I have no idea what it is, it seems to come and go.

Yes. I heard this sound (short, faint squeal approximately every 10 sec) while washing the left front wheel of my 04 E55. Popped the hood but couldn't identify it. Anyone find out anything?

Are you talking about the high pitched whistle, at very low volume in my 04 E320, when you depress the brake pedal?

The sound I hear only occurs if the engine is running and I depress the brake pedal. The car does not have to be moving. The sound continues at the same low level, high frequency as long as the brake pedal is depressed. If it's real quiet in the car this sound is annoying especially at a stop light. I'm forced to shift into neutral or put the parking brake on so I can take my foot off the brake pedal.
Does anyone else hear this?

This is a common problem, go to tech and ask them to put a supressor on it. just radio noise for electronic brakes.. mine was bad, now I rarely if ever hear it.

Brav, If I understand you post, the sound I hear is RF interference in the Audio system. However, I'm able to hear this with the COMAND system OFF. Please be more specific. Where is the suppressor (Capacitor?) connected? I told the service rep that there was a TSB on the problem, based on posts in this forum) but his search of the MB database found nothing. Of course I can't be sure he search anything.
Thanks
James

Definately not coming from audio system.. coming from footwell. I'll try to dig up some more details. There are a couple other threads on this if you search.

And I know what you mean, it drove me nuts.

I had that sound in the footwel and has them do the "Whistiling SBC" TSB and it seems to fix it..

Although I now have learned that this is a fix for 03's and I have a 04.. So do you...

DO NOT take for granted that all fixes (i.e. bulletins) have been applied even if you took delivery or your build date is after the bulletin release date. You would think all vehicles coming off the assembly line would automatically have ALL known fixes but in the real world, as I read time and time again here, it is not the case. If you have a particular problem or fault and it has been discussed here with an associated bulletin, by all means relay this and suggest that the shop foreman get involved no matter the cut off year and/or date.
