2008 E350 Battery Replacement?

Hello,

I had the red light battery message displaying on my cluster for a few days. Hence,I read several "how-to" threads on replacing the battery on w-211's. However, most threads mention an aux battery in the engine compartment, but my 2008 e350 does not have a small battery in the engine compartment. Therefore,do i only need to replace the main battery in the trunk?

Also,I should mention this is for a 08 e350 base model and not the 4matic e350.

1. your car does not have SBC, therefore no 2nd battery. I think change happen in 2008.
2. red battery message with engine on -means bad charging, so you have alternator problem. How many miles on alternator brushes?

Ahhh!Your right triple AAA stop by and tested the battery, starter, & alternator and confirmed that it was an alternator issue.

I don't think the alternator brushes have ever been replaced since buying the car.Although,i could be wrong.

I'm wondering if i should even bother attempting to replace the alternator my self or drop if off to a mechanic.

I just replaced Voltage Regulator on my Bluetec.
Buying from internet MB dealer VR cost me $46, alternator retails above $1000.
Your choice. ...
On my Bluetec I did it on ramps and after unbolting alternator, without disconnecting anything else I was able to flip it 90 degree and remove VR with alternator still on the side of the engine. I did other jobs as well, but think it was 1 HR job for VR.
Now wait for monkeys who will tell you that you can't buy VR without supplying VIN and can't unbolt alternator without hooking up DAS computer.

SBC went away in 2007 so the 2nd battery was gone in 2007.

There are many other places to get an alternator, rockauto, advance auto, etc, they range in price from $105-$350 and of course you could probably pay $1000 if you went to the local MB dealer parts counter.

For charging problems, it usually the alternator, voltage regulator or battery control module.
