Best Tires for E350 4matic?
Dealer is blaming my low speed drumming noise/vibration on tires. He recommended MXV4 which they don't make in a 245/45/17's. I've reviewed the MXM's and OEM continentals on tire rack and neith seem like good choices. First does everybody agree that the OEM ContiTourings are not great quality. What are good replacements? I want long lasting quiet vibration free tires...that ideally don't break the bank and aren't some off name brand

The dealer is correct tires are most probably causing your problem. I went throught 3 sets of tires in 60,000 miles to finally come to Michelins. Won't buy anything else now.

In my opinion your requirements are conflicting, high performance in my opinion does not come with high mileage tyres. Perhaps your tyre performance only means they have to last long. Contis or Michelin W-rated tyres are not good there but handling performance would be better than with those that last longer.
In Europe, Continental and Michelin high performance tyres have been at the top on most tyres tests I've seen.

Hey I don't know where you live, but I'm in Chicago and have snow tires, so instead of putting all season's on like the contis, i put on m+s tires, pirelly p zero nero's....they are absolutely amazing...in comparison to the continentals that came with the car, these things give so much better braking response and are about as sticky as **** in a blanket in hard corners!! when you set an edge, they hold that line and dont lean out....in terms of wet performance, they do a great job even under heavy breaking in the rain on newer asphault...if im not mistaken they were 168 a tire, and have a treadwear rating of 420. check them out.

I haven't been dissapointed with tire life or performance on both my 211 RWDs with Michelins.
I've been buying Michelins on all my vehicles since 1993 because of their somewhat "harder" rubber composition which makes them last longer, but softer rubber compounds are said to have more "stickiness' at the expense of tire life.

Just purchased new tires
I am not a huge fan of the ContiTouring CH tires. Yet I did get 35K miles out of the set with remaining tread depth between 3-4 32nds. Not bad in my book although the noise level was getting up there.
I read the TireRack reviews and spoke to too many tire dealers. I ended up with Conti Pro which is a better tire than the ContiTouring both in terms of load rating (99H vs 95H) and wear (400 vs 360). I have put about 2K miles on them and so far I like them. The Michelins are too expensive and have less than great reviews on TireRack.

I never had good experience with Continentials.... all of them get out of round too fast, noisy, bumpy, etc...
I buy the best... Michelin for all my cars for safety and peace-of-mind, irregardless of cost, since that piece of rubber is the only thing between you and the ground!
I would go for the Michelin Pilot A/S (all weather and good mileage) tires

E320
Was also a big Pilot fan but when Americas Tire had the RE960s for ~$35 less
per tire and a $100 rebate from Bridgestone it made $ sense to give them
a try for the BMW 3 series we used for daily commuting. Tirerack.com reviews also had very positive reviews and high avg point scores on
the RE960s.
Yet even another selling feature of the Bridgestones was the 40K mile warranty for Z rated tire ( no milage warranty offered on the Michelins).
Had almost 20K miles when we traded the 3 series in and the tread looked thick as new.
Will definitely get the RE960's as soon as the new Falkens Ziex tires which the Mercedes dealer put on my CPO E320 are worn.

Honda Accord
Just put Bridgestone RE760 summer tires on the car about 300 miles ago in the 225/55-16 size. Got them to improve wet weather traction, which I haven't been able to test because it has been so dry. Very nice tire.
However, one advantage that the Michelin MXV4 Energy tire has is that it is a low rolling resistance tire. I had the Continental touring tires on the car and I have noticed a slight decrease in fuel economy since switching to the new tires

NO!. The tires cupped out with uneven wear and that is where the noise originated. I went through 3 full sets of 4 in 60,000 miles and 3 alignments before I found out just installing Michelins would solve all the issues. I now have 10,000 on Michelin's Pilot and they are quiet, wear even and don't show any abnormal wear patterns. Just took me a while to figure out that the Michelin's were using a different wind method on the belts with a seamless system vs others using a seamed belt. However I only looked at the standard E500 tire size 245x45x17, it might be different in other sizes.
Now it is much cheaper for me to just buy the Michelins and vs trying to save $$ on other brands.

The noise is giving me headaches now, so I REALLY appreciate the info. Frankly, I expected the winter tires to be noisy, but when the factory all-season Contis went back on, I was still hearing noise.

I've got the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 on my stock 17's right now while I'm waiting for my custom wheels. Best tires I've ever had on this car. Period.

Thanks I think that's what I will go with. What kills me is the price differential you have to pay due to the size. At Costco 225/50/17 are 136 for the 245/45/17 they are like 245ish. Next E Class is definitely going to have 16's on it. Though I love the look of the 17's.
