I truly hate to break it to you, but those 2 codes together .... almost ALWAYS, nearly 100% of the time ... indicate that your W211 M272 engine ... has suffered from the dreaded Balance Shaft sprocket worn out condition. There are some good threads on here on how to remove the hall sensors and peek inside to see the cams position to confirm ... but with P0016 and P0017 together on a 2006 E350 ... take my word for it .. it's the balance shaft.
I would like to know how many miles you have on your 2006 ?

Oh wait .. I may have read your codes above incorrectly. 0116 and 0117 are usually just cooling system errors ... mainly a bad thermostat. 0016 and 0017 are the Balance shaft codes. If you truly have 0116 + 0117 ... consider yourself fortunate .... and replace your thermostat. Sorry if I alarmed you

Thanks for your response. My E350 currently has 189k. I purchased it knowing about the balance shaft issue. Part of my rationale was the mileage. The car had 168k when I purchased it and the owner had kept good records. From all of the posts and write-ups on the balance shaft, it seemed that the condition developed at or around the 60k-80k mile mark. So I figured that if this car had made it to 168k, then I might be ok. You did shake me up a bit though.

I don't think you're remembering the right codes. P0117/P0116 is a coolant temperature error message. P0017/P0016 could be the balance shaft. I believe the sensor is part of the thermostat so if you haven't changed it in a while, it's probably ok to change it. I believe Whaler is the OEM for it, I actually replaced mine a few months ago, looked exactly the same as OEM except the MB logo was missing in one spot. I'd also suggest you change out the idler pulleys/tensioner while you're at it if you haven't done so in a while as you have to take off one of the pulley's anyway while changing the thermostat. Rockauto sells a belt drive component kit which includes the tensioner/two pulleys and the belt for $122.

P0016 (MB 1208), P0017 (1200) = balance shaft.
P0116/0117 = coolant temperature sensor.
