Question Climate Control Question

I took delivery on my 2004 E320 4-Matic 3 weeks ago with Appearance and Premium packages and 4-zone climate control. Thank you to everyone on the forum as it has been quite helpful in providing information on the new E-Class.

Overall I love the car although I was hoping someone could help with a question on climate control. I have the 4 zone feature and when I rotate the dial to direct air just to the floor (or just up at the dash) air continues to flow through the center vent. I know I can manually close those vents via the thumbwheels but it does not make sense that I should need to do that. I have taken it to the dealer to check and he confirms this is "normal" operation. If so, the maual dials are useless.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

hey congrats on your cew car! i actually just tested this on my car, and i agree with you 100% its kind of wierd, because if its on auto, the center vent wont give out much air, but once you put it to the feet only, it blows more out, which is really wierd. you might want to look in your manual and see what it says though. GL with your car.

Center Vent

This is actually a very nice "European" feature. My experiance it works like this- When the outside air is warm and the AC is on- it will blow cool air from the AC.

When the outside air is cool and you have a warmer temp running in the cabin, the center vent is not particularly active since on auto the system is directing the air flow very evenly and it will not have a "strong" flow.

But as an alternative you can have it pull cool outside air . This works when you have the blue center dial showing or illuminated AND you override the air direction on the vent dial. This will allow that you have warm air from all other vents and cool air from the center. The feel of fresh cool air on your face while the heater is on in the cabin is refreshing. I use this feature a lot. Hope I was some help. Keeps me awake on long stretches.

Perfectly correct

We all know that you should 'take a break' when travelling long distances. However during really cold spells, when the climate control is set to keep out the freezing temperatures, the cool air from the centre vents is very refreshing. (helps to keep you awake ) and you can open or close it, whenever you choose.

Is that what the blue dial is for?

In a word, "yes"
or I will try my newly learnt 'Texan' "Yup"

It is basically a thumb wheel for cool air.

Thanks bmms8. The manual states that the airflow should come out only from the floor if that is where the dial is directed. I still find it strange that on a manual setting air still comes out of the center vent. It does this even if the blue dial in the center is rotated off.

On the C-class loaner provided by the dealer the manual air flow worked as it should (i.e., no air out of center vents when airflow directed to floor).
