can i purchase the exterior key fon and just transfer enternals easily. My buttons have tears and would like to change the exterior key fob. 2007 E550 has 3 buttons

simplistically speaking, you can transfer circuit boards if you can locate the same Smartkey
design if they are in the all black plastic enclosure, or the 1st gen chrome key with the
segmented buttons

There's old threads about this out there. If you don't have keyless go, it's easier, if you have keyless go, it's much harder. They sell empty cases on eBay.

I changed the case on my 1998 key and the new cases from China did not work.
I bought used key and swap the remote board + ignition chip and it works, but the "new" casing is already showing some wear.
When you shop around, you can find dealer selling new keys for $180, so buying new chrome key and putting old one for spare might be valid option.

Crucial thing to note with Chrome keys is shape of the Panic button.
Round/oval panic button has removable board.
There are chinese versions made, but best bet is to get used key with identical case.
I don't think KLG vs. NKLG matters for case, you will find the KLG versions are cheaper since the board itself is less useful for updaters.
Triangle Panic button is sealed for life, not easily updated.
