2006 E500 4matic Wagon Trailer Hitch Install Pics Curt 11820

I installed my hitch this weekend. I would say it took me ~2 hours to do with trial and error. If I had an electric or pneumatic ratchet and removed the bumper first it would have gone quicker, I tried installing the hitch with the bumper on the car.

I hope this helps!

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have not done any brake light/turn signal wiring.

Tools needed.

10mm socket
2x - 16mm sockets or 1 socket and 1 box wrench (I used a Gearwrench)
1 pry bar
Panel clip removal tool.
T30 torx bit
PB blaster

You will want to remove the bumper first.(directions from Curt do not mention removal).

To remove the bumper.

1. Remove rear hatch side trim panels (no pics of how to) if you cannot do this then stop and have someone install your hitch.

2. Remove sub-woofer on passenger side and the Airmatic reservoir.

Remove clip and 10mm plastic nut. There is a bolt behind the fender liner that holds the bumper to the quarter. (I forgot that pic)

3. Slide bumper back to remove. A second set of hands would help but not needed.

4. Remove 16mm lower nut, no need to remove the bolt.

5. Remove exhaust side heat shields, 16mm nuts, exhaust hanger. Remove the hanger to make removing the 16mm nuts easier. There is a 3rd exhaust hanger farther under the car that if you remove it will let the exhaust lower more. I did the install without jack stands so I could not reach the 3rd hanger.

6. Install the hitch. A second set of hands would make it easier but not needed. Sorry about not having a good pic of the hitch without the bumper on, but mounting points are pretty self explanatory.

7. Put it all back together.

Looks like Curt has changed design.
I have older hitch that I used on 2005 wagon and now have on 2008 E320.
It clamps only to the bumper mounts and does not require any major disassemble.
