Transmission Drop
Good day gents.
I have acquired great knowledge from you all through this forum, and today I approach you with a question I don't seem to find an answer for. I will drop the tranny (7 spd) on my 06 E350 this weekend. Do you have any tutorials/pointers on the order to proceed? I have looked and searched the forum to no avail... If anyone knows of a post that I may have overlooked, I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.
Just looking for pointers to make it easier.. Like, 1st take out the exhaust or else... (or, there is no need to take out the exhaust)... Do i need to take out the driveshaft completely or just undo the giubo?
Any pointers, tips, help is greatly appreciated. Great weekend to you all in advance.

Did you check youtube. ?
I start driving MB about 20 years ago, becouse I did not want to drop transmissions anymore
Point is that the scope is well over average DIY and it does require shop equipment to do it (although on my Oldsmobile I did it on driveway with ramps, but than, I was 25 years younger)
Such job is not really technically challenging, but require long socket extensions and sometimes special wrenches.
Not mentioning lot and lot of cleaning rugs or towels.
So here is YOUR chance to make it to forum history and come with good pictorial.
Good luck.

Haynes manual for 2002 - 2010 E-Class Diesel (ISBN 978 0 85733 710 8) covers AT removal and installation step by step.
You can find paperback on Amazon etc. starting around $20 or so.
There are many DVD's based factory manual on the eBay...
Why do you want to remove the AT?

Well. Long story short is... I found this very reasonably priced 06 E350 with a whining sound (Runs and drives great). To me, it seems to be either the torque converter or the tranny's oil pump behind the bell housing. If I go the lazy route and get one rebuilt, the price of the car is still a few bucks below book price. If I just get a tranny from a junk yard (61K mile tranny on ebay for 1100).. I would be a couple grand below book... SO... it is just a nice weekend project for me and an intro to MB's mechanics... Yes, I'm just a bit 'loco' I guess.

I always start by disconnecting the battery then removing tail shafts and exhaust components .
All bellhousing bolts can be gotten to with a very long extension bar (meter or so) and swivel head make sure you have a breaker bar handy as you can count on the fact of the bolts being super tight

So after crawling below the car for a while, I took exhaust off 1st, took drive shaft off second, undo the bell housing bolts on a star pattern (haven't taken them completely out, just untightened them to release pressure from all contact points, placed a jack support under, took off the rear transmission mount, unhook cables and the gear lever/rod ... should be out here later today.
I did took out all fluid from the transmission and took the filter apart first to make sure my suspicion is correct. Here is what the filter looked like once opened..
all this on the tranny filter... not good!

Check the shavings with magnet if they are steel, or aluminium.
What was the mileage?
7G generally have good reputation and I have 2 with about 180k each working nicely.

Car has 144K Miles on it.
The shavings are mostly non-ferrous. There were very little shavigs sticking to the magnet
