E-coupe cometh!
Notice the suicide style doors(?!) and the absence of a

Did Mercedes read my post about the idea of having an E class coupe? If so (which I don't think so) it is a miracle. The drawing looks extremely sexy. If they come out with an AMG version, that will be a car I'll definitely have to get.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

First there has to be a market for the car and each German auto maker has one in the works probably only on paper at this time. It may come to fruition if BMW makes a 5 series coupe and Audi makes theirs. I believe that Jaguar has plans for a S-Type coupe also. Every make is trying to create new markets. Competition is great.
Will it take sales from the CLK? I doubt it, because the CLK is the small coupe and this will be the mid coupe and the CL the large coupe. Every make need small, mid and large in sedans and coupes and SUV.

The CLK, based on the C class chassis, competes with the 3 series coupe, and has done well around the world.
The CL is the S class coupe.
There is no doubt that Mercedes are contemplating the return of the E coupe, unless they do not wish to participate in the midsize coupe segment against the 6 series, which would be highly unlikely.
BMW is to have their 6 series back within the next couple of years. This car is based on the new 5-series chassis. The idea of a E-class coupe to give the 6 series battle is logical.

The C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe! That would make it FOUR MB coupes. Perhaps the CLK will be phased out, when the E coupe arrives.
I think it's just a pipe-dream. The gap between the CL coupe and the CLK is too narrow, an E-class coupe would be more detrimental to the other cars' sales than good. Not to mention the market for coupes has been slowing down in the past few years. The CLK is really the closest thing there is to an E-class coupe. It's actually bigger than the last E-class coupe, the '95 E320.

I thought that MBZ had missed an upscale opportunity by NOT giving the W209 CLK the same headlights as the W211 and now I realize why they did not - The W211 E-Coupe is in the plans.
It seems to me that MB has already made their decision on this...they spent a bundle on the new CLK...If they make this switch it won't be for at least 4 years...I think it would be a good idea...upgrade the current C class coupe a bit...which is a hit. Phase out the CLK...replace with an E class coupe. I would forgo a hardtop and only do a hard vario roof ala the SL. An E class four seat drop top/hardtop coupe would be emmensely popular.
However, I would think the CL will stay, so the 2004/5 line-up could present three MB coupes:
1. C Sports Coupe - Base MSRP $30,000.-
2. E Class (new) - Base MSRP $50,000.-
3. CL Coupe - Base MSRP $80,000.-
All Models with the Panorama Sunroof option.
