However - as I was chatting with a knowledgeable MB tech yesterday, it seems that the very first few US spec W211 comands actually had a DVD drive in the headunit but that was quickly changed...so it might be that you salesman is refering to those comands when thinking that the DVD can be brought back to live easily.
I did trade in a US spec W211 comand last week (2004) and want to take it home for some software checks and downloads...I still believe that this unit has a simple CD rom drive instead of a DVD drive though...
greetingz,

I am going with the Steve retro, after hearding good comments from Krispy. Also steve is very good in returning e-mails. Hopefully something can be done this weekend with him.
Keep you guys posted.
something very strange with my head unit.... Today I put in a CD with the name of the song embedded (yes I burned them :P) and the nav head unit can read the song title. I was rather impressed.

I am going to take out my command tonight and see what is inside it. If i killed it, I know I can always get a euro command.

Personally, i would like to have the DVD playback feature....
I wish the whole DVD idea is correct...
the cd title feature is cool too... haa.. I know everyone else knows about it already... but its a discovery for me :P

Navigation retrofit
Retrofit navigation in 2004 E55
Navigation not tracking correctly and no console display
Car back to dealer, dealer turns on console display and begins diagnosis of tracking issue
Customer (me) suggests possible software update (something he read in forum)
Dealer says not possible as car is 2004 with new console
Dealer replaces navigation unit - issue not resolved
Customer suggests software update
Dealer replaces antenna - issue not resolved
Customer suggests software update
Dealer replace entire command unit - issue not resolved
Customer suggests software update
Dealer looks into possible issue with wiring harness
Customer calls dealer to inquire about car, dealer informs customer that it appears they have resolved the issue but are doing further testing
Customer asked dealer what resolved the issue
Dealer informs customer that they downloaded software from MB, burned a disc and updated the command unit.
Customer asks dealer if that sounds similar to what he had suggested
Dealer - no comment
From the dealers perspective 99% of the time the customer probably has no clue

90% of the service guys are incompetent.
If you find a good one that will actually listen to your suggestions, I suggest you stick with him.
I drive over 50 miles to see a good service guy.

This just goes to illustrate how *stupid* some MB tech persons can be. The automatic assuption is that the cutomer is always wrong and knows nothing whatsoever about electronics and automobiles.
They might want to have a discussion with their sales and advertising people as to why they are marketing to a younger and more tech-savvy demographic.
