E550 Owners

Been thinking about getting myself an E550. Love the sedan with the power.Roomy, and I wont be using much except for groceries. I want an 07-09 as I dont like the 2010 styling and the turbo with direct injection is just more problems down the long run with having to clean the intake valves etc.
So owners (if any) of the 5.5 E550,how does it fare?

Edit:read the another recent thread on the comparison, many say turbo. Hows that carbon on the valves? But man do I hate the front on the '10s and up.

I'm also a newbie, but I'll give my impressions of the car that I've owned for 4 days. My 550 is a P02 and Sport package car, but but its not as intense as my E39 BMW. Which is actually why I like it. Our roads are terrible and this car eats up the bumps pretty well. I drive it in comfort, and when you take off hard, the front end lifts like a drag car. Its hilarious. I was not expecting that. The car, even with 142k miles on it is still tight and everything functions like it should, save for the air conditioner.

The only thing I don't care for is that this car is not as quiet going down the road as my E39. I believe the issue may be the mostly worn Michelin Pilot Sports, so when I go to replace them, I'll be sourcing some quieter tires hoping it will dampen the noise a bit. Also, the climate control is loud. I couldn't believe how loud it is. Its easily as loud as the Vintage Air kit in my 79 Camaro. And I know this may be obvious, but the fuel consumption is bad. On a 72 mph, fairly flat distance, I could only nail down just under 21mpg.

Outside of that, this thing has presence, it rides really nice and eats up miles (and fuel). Good luck on your search!

Awesome thanks for your input. Thats good to know that it still goes strong.Whats wrong with the A/C?
Yea that fuel mileage is comical when it comes down to it,good thing I'll only be driving it occasionally. I have an 02 Maxima with the 6 speed that I dont drive much, mileage isnt that great and thats a damn 6 .
Check out the link .Even mentioning the HVAC noise.

My E63 will do 21-22mpg under the same conditions with some spirited moments thrown in.

I’ve had my 07 e550 for 4 years and have put on 135k miles. Car has 260k miles total and runs as strong as when I purchased; however, I am starting to see some oil consumption. Only issues have been the fairly typical w211 ones: ball joints, keyless door handles, steering angle sensor, and one air strut. Freeway passing power is smooth and terrific. Mileage has been outstanding with daily freeway runs over 30 mpg (high of 33.5 for a 75 mile sea level to sea level run) and an overall average over 28 for the last 15,000 miles. My only beef is the transmission which is silky smooth but has a hazardously slow kickdown response time.

It been such an easy to maintain and enjoyable car that I’m keeping an eye out for an 09 e550 or e63 as a replacement (not a fan of the w212 styling).

How are you getting 30 mpg? I've got an E550 4Matic that I struggle to get 21 out of.

That 4matic apparently kills mileage

Actually, I blast on ramps and off ramps but otherwise I drive with a soft foot.

Here’s my mileage from last year: 28.3 mpg for 60k miles (actually the car registers about 3% more than my manual calc’s).

I would hate to drive that much.

I've had my Dodge Durango for just over 15 years and have put 148,000 on it. It's been my daily for most of that time.

Ive been thinking ,I think Im gonna go with the E55.03-06. Just to kill some time I went to look at mustangs(not into the new cars, they all suck IMO,also had an '08 GT)
Said if he could get it down to 29k then maybe I would consider it. Car been sitting there with dust under the hood, basic GT model 6 speed. Went for a quick drive.Nothing on price except for rebates.LOL
Then the sales manager ask what other car I have in mind, told him the E55.He said he had never heard of it. Then he mentioned the stuff about expensive maintenance ,200 dollar oil changes etc.
Ahh salesman. But yeah,an E55 is about 98 percent on my list now.

He's a little off, it's $300 oil changes. But that's the standard price of service A. If you read what they do, they basically check a bunch of stuff and I think you may also get new wipers too. Or just go do your own synthetic oil change. Not sure about the E55, but the E350 uses 8.5 quarts of synthetic oil so unless you pick up a 5 quart jug of Mobil 0w40 at Wlamart for $20 (just reduced, but even cheaper when they offer a $12 rebate in the spring/fall) it will still cost you at least $60-$100 at a regular shop. But that's a 10k oil change.

I would prefer the 2007-2009 E550. You don't have the SBC like you would on the E55 and it's still a V8. Early 2007 E550's had a bad batch of engines so check the serial number. Plus 2007 had the face lift on the interior and you're more likely to find options like parktronic, bixenons with active curve illumination and keyless go. Those weren't that common on E55's. The E63's had head bolt problems til 2011 although it seems like lots of people fixed them.

I had a 2007 e550 for almost 6 years up until about last year. I averaged maybe 14mpg over ~75k miles that I tracked. I would say stay away from the 07 for potential engine issues, late model 07 should be okay. 09 brought a new infotainment update if you care about things like that. Power is very good, mine had airmatic which made it pretty smooth even on 19 inch wheels. I had very little go wrong on that car. Lots of aftermarket options on this platform which is nice. A wonderful car if you keep up with maintenance .

Bad motor numbers for 2007

What is this about bad motors? Where can I look up these numbers? Mercedes » E-Class » 2003-2009About a month ago my check engine light came on while driving down there he freeway. When I cam to the next stop it began to studder a little bit. I took it to the local European shop in my area that Is known to be ( besides the dealer)who to go to. They first told me after diagnosis the vehicle needed a coil pack on cylinder 5. After being gone a week I called and they said the misfire had moved to cylinder 2 and that also needed a coil pack. I said ok and figured that was that. When I didn’t recieve a come pick up your car call after 3 days I called them and they said the car had low compression in all cylinders now, they couldn’t figure out the problem and to come pick up the car. I am frustrated and can’t understand why it has low compression now and it runs the same as it did when I dropped it off. Has anyone heard of these misfires jumping or the compression problem at all? Please help

Start a new thread. No reason to piggy back on this one when you have your own issues that have zero relation.
