Overheating while idling

I recently had my thermostat replaced on my 2006 E350 and was experiencing overheating the day after the replacement. The coolant in the car was low after being replaced. I took it back to the mechanic and they replaced the thermostat housing gasket because it was leaking coolant.

I am driving the car car today and still noticing the thermostat in the car is fluctuating when I’m driving and idling. Typically my car thermostat would sit right above 80C and is right there when I’m driving but when idling it’s right below 90C.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?

2006 E350 — 133,802 miles
Thanks!

Did your mechanic replace only the thermostat or did he do the housing as well? If the coolant was low after being replaced and they didn't top it up with the proper MB coolant, I'll bet they only did the thermostat and didn't use an OEM one... Pointed questions, I'd be asking.

Edit: 90C is nowhere near overheating. You might be seeing your thermostat acting properly. Why did you have the thermostat replaced?

I had the thermostat replaced based on the CEL reading. The coolant was topped off with according to them proper MB coolant. The mechanic solely works on German vehicles and I would assume is using OEM parts.

It was overheating as there was steam/smoke coming from under the hood which is why I took it back. The thermostat was acting as it currently is. Never fluctuated prior to replacement so it definitely could be that it’s actually working now.
