I broke down and ordered a CDI
I have been critical of MBUSA over the decontenting and lack of options available on the '05 CDIs. I still harbor ill feelings...but... those feelings have become more numbed after actually test driving the dealer's demo car.
The car is magnificent to drive. Quiet, powerful, plush. There is nothing comparable.
I ordered it in platinum blue/ash, with panorama roof, leather, entertainment package, navigation, lighting package, dynamic seats, ventilated seats, roller blinds, wood/leather wheel, and trunk closer.
Pick up date will be 8/30 at the factory!! It will be a long wait.

The Fact of The Matter
The Fact of The Matter is that as far as I can tell after shopping for my new car all last srides, feelsummer into the fall is: Nothing else is a Benz. Nothing turns heads, rides or feels like a Benz. You CAN buy a luxury car that has more (working) bells & whistles, (Lexus) and others, but they just don't cut it. Period.
The only competition MB would have now that Bangle has "pimped the BMW rides" would be if Porsche would come out with a 4 door sedan in E & S class sizes. If they could do a SUV to perfection, theres no reason they cant be competition for M-B & a death knell for the current BMWs
