When do 05's hit the dealer lots
A few years down the line, the fact that it's a 2004 won't effect resale value nearly as much as what you'll probably save by buying at the end of the model yeer.
Remember, if you buy an 04, it is already a year old for depreciation purposes, so there is a difference when you resell. Example: you have a chocie of an 04 or an 05 in July of 04. You keep the car until July 08 (when the 09 model year is beginning). If you trade or sell your 04, it will be 5 model years old and off warranty. If you trade your 05, it will be four model years old and still in warranty (depending on the mileage of course). Just looking at 00 Es and 01 Es for example, there's about a $3000 difference in Kelly Blue Book private sale value, so you'd want to see that reflected in your purchase price (I'm not correcting for cost of money).
The real value, to me in going for an 04 would be if you are (i) leasing, or (ii) going to keeop the car much longer -- say five years plus. If you lease, the trade-in value becomes irrelevant,a nd you have an up-front en3efit to keep. If you're keeping the car for a long time, the difference in trade-in value will narrow and condition of the car will mean more. JMHO.
