4Matic staggered wheels

Picked up a set of AMG wheels for my E350, and am now shopping for tires. I have an 8.5" front wheel and 9.5" rear. From what I've been reading, differing widths don't affect the 4Matic system as long as the circumference of the tires is the same/close?

Comparing a 245/40 and 275/35, there's a 3mm difference in diameter and 9mm difference in circumference, and 3 revolutions per km difference. Would that be close enough to keep the 4Matic and ABS/ESP/cruise happy? It seems like they're close enough that a pressure adjustment could bring the rears up to the same size as the fronts? Would changing the diff oil be a good idea as well?

I'm also contemplating running a 255/40/18 on all four corners. The difference in rim width might affect the overall height a bit, but would it be as big a difference as the two different sized tires? I know this setup still wouldn't be "rotate-able" without dismounting and remounting the tires due to clearance issues with a 9.5" rim up front, but having the option to rotate every couple seasons might be nice.

I won't be running this setup in the winter, either, since I have a dedicated winter setup (245/40/18 Blizzak WS80's on stock wheels) and put about 8000km a year on the car.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/km Difference
245/40-18...... 98mm .327mm.. 653mm... 2052mm .........487 .........0.0%
275/35-18...... 96mm. 325mm.. 650mm... 2041mm,,,,,,,,, 490,,,,,,,. -0.5%

The only thing the car computer will see is rpm or rev/km.
MB never gave the owners computer data, but experience says you can have up to 3% difference before ESP and CC start to act.
You have 0.5% ,what is pretty good.
Waiting for pictures

If you're going to run staggered wheels, run the correct size tires.

245/40 front and 265 or 275/35 rear will work.

What wheels did you get? I picked up a set of OEM E63 wheels for my E500 wagon and have been trying to decide if I'll actually run staggered wheels/tires.

I bought a set of SL55 wheels from another forum member. They're the same design as the E55 wheel but with a slightly more aggressive offset. I'll be running Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+ tires, 245/40/18 up front, 275/35/18 in the back.

Why would you buy staggered wheels if you don't want to run staggered tires?

Running the same size all around on a staggered setup is like wiping before you poop. It just doesn't make sense.

When you shop for bargain wheels, you don't have too many choices. I see nothing wrong with buying staggered rims and putting the same size tires on them. Manufacturer allow pretty big flexibility in tire mounting, so with a bit of luck you can find tires that will do it safely. Last year I was on the market for white car and ended with black one.
Slim chances anybody will ever notice.
Now I keep wondering what "aggressive offset" could be?

Lower ET. Makes the wheel stick out more.

I have those same AMG staggered wheels with the black center inserts on my 4-Matic E500 wagon and I think they look great. Now running 245/45/18 Vredestein Quatrac 5 tyres all around. These were exceptional in the snow this winter and work very well on dry pavement. High performance all around tyre and no issues with any systems alerts.

Update: I just purchased (4) 245/40/18ZR 97W speed rated Milestar MS932XP tires for $60 US a piece They look well made and are from Indonesia (not China... not that it probably makes much difference). I have read that the MS932XP's are quiet and handle well. I'm going to switch out the winter Vredestein Quatrac 5 tires for these to run this summer.
