06 E320 CDI starting issue

Yesterday I’ve been driving around all day long in the rain it’s been raining for several days. In the evening after the car was sitting in a parking lot for an hour I came out and it refused to start would crank run for one, two or 3 seconds and then shut off. After about 20 attempts it ran for 6 seconds, vary rough and quit. So the next start attempt I depressed the pedal slightly and it caught, keeping it at 950 or 1000 rpm, anything less I would feel bad misfires and would see grey smoke from tail pipe, It would try to die if I let it idle around 750 until about 5 minutes warmup. Temp at that time would be about 60C And still idle rough, but less rough. At full 90C warmup, i don’t feel misfires, no smoke. Turning car off and immediately back on, it starts right up without depressing the pedal after it has fully warmed up to 90C. I don’t have a scanner yet so no codes, but I do not get a MIL light on the dash. 152000 miles. Since last night, it has the same starting problems when cold and I have to depress the pedal slightly. I really need to get a Star or scanner, but which I don’t know yet and carry it with me all the time.

Any thoughts on the issue?

could there be a code for this issue that doesn’t throw a MIL?

this problem was resolved by wiring open (with Aircraft safety wire) the swirl flaps on the intake manifold. There is a push rod ball and socket that connects to the flap servo and it wears out and one end disconnects from the servo.

no it only took a couple of months to figure out, I forgot to come back and report like thousands of other resolved issues on these forums. Somewhere somebody might appreciate that I did

2006 CDI. Is that a straight six or V-6 engine?

Thanks for responding,
Peter

the 06 CDI is the 648 engine, a straight 6
