Talking New to me, E350 (pictures updated)

Hi all,

just wanted to to share I am the new owner of a 2009 E350 4matic. I purchased the car locally from an individual who no longer wanted the car. They were the second owner and purchased it as a CPO from a local dealer at 40k. I now have the car with 170k on the dash. As per Mercedes and records, the car was serviced at the dealer up until 140k. Remainder of service has been performed at a local mechanic. The car has the P1 & P2 packages which I’m sure you all know includes most of the options for this model.

So far I love the car, I’ve always wanted one. Many years ago I had a w204 c300 which gave me no problems at all, it Was also cpo.

Ive noticed the following issues with the car:

keyless go buttons And handles are not working on both driver front and rear doors but works everywhere else even starts the car fine.

Trunk latch works but has no spring so you must move the handle back and forth to release the trunk.

Center console slide is stuck. I can force it to move forward and back but is very difficult and I know it will break if I continue to force it.

Lower front mesh in grille is bent and un hooked from brackets. Saw a new one is about $200 so I’m looking for an alternative.

Im hearing a loud noise once I start driving about 10 mph. Sounds like a bearing but was told by a random mechanic that it’s the rear differential.

Other then the issue in the rear the car is pretty solid.

Hoping i can some insight on this noise I hear.

This picture is from today, after a quick clay and polish by machine, windows tinted and wheels cleaned up. My Lexus in the background

The door handles are a known failure item on these. You can buy new handles online from oediscountparts.com. You just need to order the color, they're in the $200 range depending on the color. I'd just get the driver's side fix and skip the other one. Keyless go also locks the fuel door and the trunk. The lever for the trunk sticks on mine too. I sprayed some grease and it seemed to free it up for a little while, but now it sticks again.

There's a few other things underneath too, could be the flex disk or the motor mounts or bearing for the drive shaft. Only way to tell is to get it up on a lift. There are threads on here about the differential going bad too, it could be rebuilt or maybe you can grab a used one on eBay.

You can get used ones on eBay but they don't seem to last more than 3-4 years before they need replacement so if get a used one, it may also fail soon. It's not a bad DIY job though some claim it only takes 15-30 minutes to swap the handle. I got new ones 4 years ago and it's a little flakey now. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Water gets inside the switches and corrodes it out. They don't sell the contact separately although there was an old thread where someone got one from an old fax machine and it worked.

It took my mechanic about 10 minutes to swap mine. Granted he's done a ****load of them so he knows exactly what he's doing.

Clear sidemarker lenses with chrome amber bulbs from eBay would look nice and clean on your white car.

brought the car to another mechanic and its confirmed, the rear diff is shot. Im looking into used ones and its going to cost me about $2000 installed. Alternatively im working with a guy in NY (close to me) and more than likely pulling the trigger on his shop rebuilding mine with a new bearing. Only going to set me back less then $1,500

any explanation of what it sounded like when you were suspecting your rear dif going out? as you mentioned in your first post.

shame its shot. hopefully it can be pulled out relatively easy considering its a basic driveline like any other car with a driveshaft.

as soon as I hit even 10mph and above I hear a very loud whining sound which initially sounds like bad brakes or rotors, then possible a bearing, but its neither. Its so loud you must blast music to tune it out. I bought the car for less then $5000 so its worth it to fix it.

is yours going out?
