2006 E350 - Fuel Smell Outside the Car
Just purchased a 2006 E350 that has the basic package. Well cared for car overall. It has 125k miles on it.
We have noticed while walking up to the car after using it, there is a the smell of fuel outside the car. This happened today again when it had 1/8 of a tank of gas. I then went and filled it up later and this evening, we took it to dinner and upon returning to the car; fuel smell.
Any usual suspects here? I cannot yet tell if it is coming from the front under the hood or from the rear of the car near the tank. I know, this is not much to go on, and I don't expect a silver bullet here, just wondering if there is an achilles heel in the system that is common.
EDIT: I have read a bit about the fuel tank issue, but that sounded like it was more related to the pump and the fumes were inside the car and only when the tank was full. This occurs even when the tank is very low.
FYI, I already replace the transmission mount (10 min job) and today I replaced the oil cooler gasket and coolant reservoir, both of which were leaking. All tight and right and super clean again !!
TIA,
R.

First, pull rear seat cushion to check for leaks if so covered by warranty extension. Fine, move on to filler neck, etc. if isolated to rear.
