I have a 2003 E 320 with 190k miles. I just just recently changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, valve cover gaskets, breather hoses, and breather cover gaskets. The reason I’m writing is because I noticed discoloration on the passenger side of the engine when I pulled the valve cover. The driver side looks great, it was only the passenger side that looked abnormal. I believe the plugs were original with 190k miles but the car still ran well. Can anyone tell what this is from and if it should be of any concern.

I'm thinking the breather hose and the cover may have been plugged up on that side. Btw, it is just me or does it look somewhat dry in there? Since you are there, you may want to check the injectors. Although I would probably check it after the valve cover goes back on. Don't want any debris falling into the engine when the cover is off.
Thanks! I thoroughly cleaned the breather cover and ensured no clogged hoses/pinpoint holes. All the breather hoses we're replaced. I think it looks dry because car had been sitting a few days with the valve cover off.
