Diagnostic tool not working - iCarsoft vs Star

Hi,
I have purchase the iCarsoft dedicated scanner for my two Mercs. It works fine in the 2011 CLS but doesn't connect in the 2007 320 CDI (doesn't even read the basic engine codes). I have tested the socket in the car and all pins appear fine except the ign on pin (8) which does not energise when ign switched on. Ah ha, that is my issue . . . except that my local garage's star tool connects through the same ODB port without any issue whatsoever. Could it be that the iCarsoft tool needs pin 8 but the Star doesnt?
Pin 8 is direct on the loom and part of circuits on the car which do work fine. . . has anyone had an similar issue or offer advice??
I need it to work as I have another fault with the car now!

Thanks

CG

Plutoe plays forum DAS expert, so try to PM him for the answer.
But even with my mechanical skills, I can figure out that when SD has its independent power supply, iCarsoft depends on power from OBD.
With lack of such, no wonder it won't work.

I have found that Pin 8 is indeed supplied direct from circuit 15 (ie not independently fused) via a connector X30/9 located in the cill trunking. I will investigate further next week (away at the weekend) and report back.

In the meantime I have emailed iCarsoft to see if their scanner does need pin 8 to function

Or just stop by your local auto parts store and ask them to read the engine codes. If their scanner won't turn on, you know the answer.
