What does it take to install a navigation system independantly

Hi guys,
If I buy a navigation system (like the mercedes command 2.0 or 2.5), is it easy to install on the car, what does it take to make it work, does it require a professional instalation, does it require any part except the system itself?
I plan to buy one aftermarket because it is a lot cheaper. Anyway, i know it's a hard question because the new E-class is not available here but I am sure a lot of you know a lot more than me about how navigation systems work.
Thanks

This has been discussed nemerous times. Do a search on COMAND in these forums and you find your answers.

Here is the link ( Click Here ) for one of the past conversations about this topic.

In the long run, you are probably best just buying a vehicle with COMAND in the frst place.

The New E class has a*different* navigation to the COMAND system. I think they call it COMAND-APS (although they seem to have printed the new CLK pricelist in Germany calling the old COMAND , COMAND-APS)

The new E class uses MOST bus, and not D2B to communicate with CD changer, phone, teleaid etc etc, and BOSE has been replaced by Harmon Kardon.

I'd say that makes it impossible to ever put a COMAND system in it thats integrated with anything else, and i doubt that 2nd hand "COMAND-APS" will be available on th market for a long long time (since COMAND-APS wont be introduced for some while after E class Launch) (Same applies to Audio-50 APS)

Fitting a different Nav system, such as Alpine etc will be possible if you can get a face-plate adapter ...

I dont think anyone is really going to be able to definitively answer this until the new E arrives ..
